Overview
Lexus’s resident muscle car, the 2019 RC F, was intended to rival BMW’s M3 and M4 models, but it leans more toward straight-line speed, with a dynamic nature more Camaro-like than Bimmer-esque. The RC F is based on the V-6-powered RC coupe, but comes with a 5.0-liter V-8 and is distinguished visibly from the standard car by unique fender ducts, a hood bulge, an available carbon-fiber roof panel and an active rear spoiler. It’s nice inside—as you’d expect from the Lexus—but its plush nature doesn’t quite fit the car’s performance-oriented mission. At the very least though, it’s a luxury muscle car that’s easy to live with on a daily commute or a long road trip.
What’s New for 2019?
The RC F receives mild styling tweaks, including a reshaped front bumper, new LED headlamps, and new taillamps with LED strips. There are also new faux air ducts in the rear bumper, new wheel designs, a Blue Vortex metallic paint option, four new interior color options, and new gauge and center-stack trim. It also gets stiffer suspension bushings, different dampers, and new tires. A special 2019 RC F 10thanniversary edition comes in Nebula Gray matte paint with blue brake calipers, 19-inch black wheels, and Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires. The anniversary interior comes with carbon-fiber dash trim, blue leather upholstery, and a blue leather-wrapped shift knob and steering wheel. Only 240 units are available from U.S. dealers.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance
There’s a lot to love about RC F’s 467-horsepower 5.0-liter V-8, which generates 389 pound-feet of torque. This smooth, rev-loving engine makes a glorious exhaust note, even if some of it is artificially routed into the cabin. Coupled with the V-8 is an eight-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the rear wheels via a torque-vectoring differential. Acceleration is impressive, though the RC F feels heavy and lacks the overall agility found in its direct rivals.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The RC F’s interior feels extremely well-engineered, with soft-touch surfaces and dampened controls. The premium look and feel make the cabin a comfortable place to spend long stints behind the wheel. Standard features include power front seats, dual-zone climate control, and keyless entry. While the front seats are comfortable enough, the RC F has a tiny rear seat that’s usable only by (very patient) kids. Trunk volume measures only 10 cubic feet, and interior storage is limited. And unlike the rest of the RC range, the rear seatback in the RC F is fixed in place; so, forget about folding it down to accommodate bulky objects.
Infotainment and Connectivity
On paper, the RC F’s infotainment system ticks all the right boxes. There is a 10.3-inch screen, Amazon Alexa, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a 10-speaker audio system. That’s great, except the interface to control everything is maddening to operate. The Lexus Remote Touch controller, located on the center console, is overly sensitive and nearly impossible to use without taking your attention off the road. And Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are notably absent.
