2023 Genesis Electrified G80 Evaluation: Luxurious EV Sedan With out the EV Styling

2023 is the year Genesis is going all in with their deck on the electric car front, starting with the flagship 2023 Genesis Electrified G80.

We just reviewed the brand-new 2023 Genesis GV60. It showed just how serious and flashy Genesis was willing to go to get a piece of the electric vehicle pie. The 2023 Genesis Electrified G80 is their attempt to take on the electric vehicle market from another angle.

In short: With the 2023 Electrified G80, Genesis is throwing all of its electric knowledge, wrapping it up with luxury and tech, and seeing where it sticks. Starting with the 2023 model year, instead of the four-cylinder and twin-turbo V6-powered options, the G80 will be available with an electric motor-powered trim.

Electrified Power

With such an “electrifying” name, you don’t need many guesses to figure out just where the power is coming from with the 2023 Genesis Electrified G80. An 87.2 kWh battery powers the dual electric motor (136 kW front/136 kW rear) powerplant, putting 365 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque on tap.

With electric power, acceleration is your biggest bonus, and the same reigns true with the Electrified G80. It can propel its 5,000-pound weight to 60 miles per hour in 4.1 seconds. The Electrified G80’s standard all-wheel-drive system helps with some of that acceleration wizardry.

Right Amount of Luxury Sprinkled With Tech

Sitting in the driver seat of the Electrified G80, you are just overtaken with luxury, with Nappa leather-wrapped seats with power, lumbar, bolster, and ergo features that will undoubtedly keep you comfortable.

Directly in front of your eye is a 12.3-inch 3D digital gauge cluster with adjustable levels to the 3D display and the option to turn it off.

If the large digital gauge cluster doesn’t woo you, maybe the 14.5-inch navigation/infotainment screen might. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible, the display is your key to sending tunes to the Lexicon premium audio system sprinkled throughout the cabin, but should you want quiet, the Electrified G80 features active road noise control.

And, if for some reason you don’t want to look at these crisp, clear, beautiful displays, a heads-up display throws driver information right where you need it.

It Is Electric, We Promise

The 2023 Genesis GV60, inside and out, takes styling queues more from a Star Trek shuttlecraft, but the Electrified G80 is so much tamer. Nothing on the exterior screams EV.

You won’t find a gas cap or electric charge port on either rear quarter panel, and the charge port is uniquely and cleverly hidden on the driver’s side of the front grill. The badges simply say it is a G80.

Range Is a Concern

All you’ll need is 22 minutes to charge the Electrified G80 from 10% to an 80% battery level on a 350kW fast charger. That is less time than all those work meetings.

Along with plugging in the vehicle, we are a fan of the regenerative braking options available on the Electrified G80. Those options can be selected using what would have been gear paddle shifters on other cars, but on the G80, they change how invasive the regenerative braking is.

You can go from what equates to the subtle feeling of engine braking in a manual transmission vehicle to a one-pedal golf cart-like mode negating the need to tap the brake pedal.

Charging isn’t much of a problem with the Electrified G80, but what you are charging up to certainly is. 100% on the battery will only net you 282 miles of driving range. I would have liked 300 miles to have been the target to be competitive in its class.

Electrified G80 Is All You Get

The Electrified G80, while stealing much of its offering from the standard G80’s Prestige trim, will only be available in one lone trim. That trim will cost you $79,825.

The uniqueness of being able to choose the right G80 for you is lost on that front, but it will likely be a rare vehicle due to its availability. As of this writing, as Genesis says, “due to extremely limited availability,” the 2023 Electrified G80 will only be available for sale in 13 states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Maryland, Nevada, New York, Utah, Virginia, and Washington.

The 2023 Genesis Electrified G80 is really for the electric vehicle-minded driver who doesn’t want the “hey look at me” that comes with most electric vehicles.

The electric range is lacking, but everything going on positively in the electric department in terms of its electric-based power will certainly keep you happy. All the tech and luxury just add to an already great place to be in the driver’s seat.
