2024 Chery Omoda 5 will get extra energy, traction with new GT fashions

The Chery Omoda 5 range is expanding for 2024, with new front- and all-wheel drive GT models sitting atop the line-up.

The front-wheel drive GT is priced at $38,990 drive-away and will be at dealerships for test drives in mid-January, while the all-wheel drive GT is priced at $41,490 drive-away and will be available to test drive in February.

These new variants feature a more powerful turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine producing 137kW of power and 275Nm of torque, up 22kW and 45Nm on the existing turbo 1.5-litre in the BX and EX.

This engine is mated with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission instead of a continuously variable transmission.

The GT models also ditch the torsion beam rear suspension of the BX and EX for a multi-link setup.

Fuel consumption is 6.8L/100km on the combined cycle with front-wheel drive and 7.4L/100km with all-wheel drive.

Chery has yet to release images of the GT models.

There have also been price rises for the BX and EX, which for model year 2024 will be priced at $34,490 and $36,990 drive-away – increases of $1500 and $1000, respectively.

Chery says more specification information will be available closer to the MY24 line-up’s launch, but has announced new features include digital radio, a frameless rear-view mirror with an auto dimming function, and a more powerful 50W wireless device charger.

MY23 BX and EX models are still available at dealers, with drive-away pricing of $32,990 and $35,990 drive-away – plus a $1500 factory bonus if you take delivery before January 31.

Chery has had a successful relaunch as a factory-backed operation. Despite only beginning sales in April, it still managed to sell 5890 vehicles during the 2023 calendar year.

The Chinese brand had previously entered Australia under distributor Ateco in 2011 but withdrew in 2015, and sold only 4651 vehicles during this entire period, with 27 leftover units delivered over 2016-18.

Most of the Cherys sold here last year were Omoda 5s, with the Tiggo 7 Pro arriving at the tail end of the year.

With 5370 sales, the Omoda 5 outsold established rivals like the Honda HR-V (2182 sales), Skoda Kamiq (1985), Suzuki Vitara (2016) and Toyota C-HR (4786).
