2024 Toyota Camry revealed with hybrid energy solely

There’s a new Toyota Camry, and it’s coming to Australia.

The new-generation sedan (which presents as a heavily overhauled take on the outgoing car) will touch down locally in the second half of 2024, with hybrid power only.

Toyota USA will offer the 2.5-litre hybrid powertrain in front-wheel drive (168kW) or all-wheel drive (173kW) guises, but Toyota Australia hasn’t confirmed which options will make it Down Under.

It has confirmed the hybrid system will feature lighter, more compact electric motors than in the current model, along with a more modern battery system.

Where cars for the USA are made in Kentucky, the cars bound for Australia will be manufactured in Japan.

Along with a new look inspired by the new Prius and the bigger, hydrogen-powered Mirai, the Camry features an overhauled interior packing the technology rolling out across the broader Toyota range.

Base models will feature an 8.0-inch central touchscreen and a 7.0-inch digital driver display, while higher-end cars will have 12.3-inch displays.

Toyota has also confirmed a full suite of active driver assists will feature on the new Camry, alongside luxury features such a JBL sound system, leather trim, and a surround-view camera.

If you’re waiting for a current Camry, there’s a chance you’ll eventually be delivered the new model you see here.

Toyota Australia has paused orders of the current model in the face of “extraordinary demand”, which has seen 90 per cent of Camry buyers opting for the hybrid instead of the petrol-only model.

Wait times remain at more than two years for the Camry Hybrid, which is popular with taxi and ride-share drivers in Australia.

Toyota hasn’t confirmed whether it will transition existing orders to the new car, given it’s due in less than 12 months, and what will happen to customers who’ve committed to buying the old car at a different price.
