1. National World War I Museum and Memorial

Originally opening in 1926 as the Liberty Memorial, the National WWI Museum and Memorial is a must-visit in the area. This monument and national World War I museum, managed by the Kansas City Board of Parks and Recreation Commissioners, focuses on multiple global events from the first World War through the Paris Peace Conference.

This 32,000-square-foot national museum facility has a glass bridge that travels over a field of 9,000 red poppies, where each poppy represents 1,000 combatant deaths during the first World War

The National World War I Museum also features two main galleries with period artifacts, including a Renault FT tank, uniforms, a 1917 Harley-Davidson Model J motorcycle, and General John J. Pershing’s headquarters flag.

2. Roanoke Park

12. National Airline History Museum

Set within the Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport, the National Airline History Museum features many unique historical artifacts and stories set within the aviation museum. Exhibits in the museum include numerous aircraft, including the Martin 404, the Douglas DC-3, the Lockheed Super “G” Constellation, the Lockheed L-1011 TriStar, and a replica of TWA’s corporate Moonliner II. 

In addition to housing historical artifacts and aircraft, the National Airline History Museum has a multipurpose simulator, providing an opportunity for visitors to try their hands at flying various airplanes. 16. Lakeside Nature Center

17. Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art

Opened in 1994, the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art has hosted several traveling collections that later joined the museum’s permanent collection featuring more than 1,400 works of art. The museum was the first and largest contemporary art museum in Missouri.

Many items in the permanent collection were created after the 1913 Armory Show, or the International Exhibition of Modern Art, through the present day. Artists featured at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art include Robert Motherwell, Jasper Johns, Jim Dine, Dale Chihuly, and Barbara Grad. In addition to marveling at the many beautiful works of art at the museum, the architecture of the museum’s 23,200 square foot concrete, steel, and glass structure is a masterpiece.

After exploring the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, stop by Cafe Sebastienne for a combination of contemporary art and cuisine in a restaurant named after the daughter of African-American artist Frederick James Brown. The cafe has two unique spaces. The first, an intimate dining room with a floor-to-ceiling installation of more than 100 paintings by Frederick, and the second, a natural light-filled enclosed courtyard.

18. Money Museum

At the Money Museum, discover the history of coins and bills, see a massive cash vault, and learn more during a tour of a federal bank building. This museum is truly a one-in-a-billion (dollar) experience. During your time at the Money Museum, you will learn how the Federal Reserve Bank processes millions of dollars daily, feel a genuine gold bar, and look at the historic Harry S. Truman coin collection.

You’ll get your hands on a gold brick worth $400,000, but unfortunately, you cannot keep it, but you are more than welcome to take plenty of photographs to make you feel like a millionaire while on vacation. The Money Museum offers guided tours and up-close experiences with their money-handling processes.

When you are done with your tour, head down the block for lunch or dinner at Brick House KC, a popular restaurant in town serving a number of delicious dishes, including Biscuits and Gravy, the Big A** Breakfast Burrito, and The Brickhouse, which is fried chicken, bacon, and house-made gravy topped with a sunny side egg, all on a biscuit.

19. Kansas City Ballet

21. Arrowhead Stadium

23. Arabia Steamboat Museum

The Arabia Steamboat Museum has been a popular national museum in Kansas City for more than 25 years, showcasing artifacts, displays, and other items from the sinking of the Arabia on the Missouri River on September 5, 1856. Items included in the museum’s impressive collection include clothing, fine china, guns, tools, and children’s toys that were found and recovered when the steamboat was discovered.

Visits to the museum are self-guided, with a new series of short videos that walk you through the story of the Arabia dig. Museum staff and members of the original dig team will be there if you have any questions along the way. You may only have time to visit the Arabia Steamboat Museum once during your trip to the area, but it will quickly become a Kansas City staple you visit during each return trip.

24. Santa Fe Trail

One of the most recognizable trails in the country is the Santa Fe. Did you know that this trail makes an appearance in the city before it continues on? Experience an outdoor adventure by visiting Blue Valley Park, which has a trail known as Big Blue River Crossing, which connects to the famous trail leading to Santa Fe.

The trail was an ancient passageway used by merchants to transport goods from Missouri to Santa Fe, New Mexico. The trail was also used for stagecoach travel and as a mail route for the Pony Express. When walking along this historic trail, I couldn’t help but imagine its important past. It was an experience that has me wanting to return to Missouri to relive it again.

25. T-Mobile Center

Formerly known as the Sprint Center and located in the Power & Light District, the T-Mobile Center is the area’s premier live entertainment and sporting event venue. Though the Sprint Center was renamed in 2020, the venue still hosts amazing events and activities, including performances by Cirque du Soleil Corteo, Adam Sandler, Disney On Ice, and the ultimate college basketball experience: the Big 12 Conference Men’s Basketball Championship.

Whether you want to catch sporting events, such as the college basketball experience, or enjoy a performance, planning to catch a show or event and spend time at the T-Mobile Center will round out your Kansas City experience. 26. The John Wornall House Museum

27. Science City

You have to visit this location to experience the amazement and wonder others experience when wandering along winding trails, sitting in wide-open prairies, and smelling the flowers in the meticulously-kept gardens.

Though no outside food is allowed in the gardens, you will find picnic tables scattered throughout, where you can enjoy a picnic lunch purchased from the gardens’ café.
