5.11 Tactical A/T Mid Waterproof Boot

AllOutdoor Long Term Review: 5.11 Tactical A/T Mid Waterproof Boot

Today we’re looking at the 5.11 Tactical A/T Mid Waterproof Boot, a waterproof variant of their popular tactical footwear line. After spending quality time with 5.11 Tactical’s footwear lineup, including their standard A/T Mid Boot, I’ve put nearly a year into testing their waterproof version. Eleven months of daily wear through puddles, woods, and work environments has given me some solid insights into whether the extra $15 for waterproofing is worth it (spoiler alert: it absolutely is).

Specifications: 5.11 Tactical A/T Mid Waterproof Boot

The A/T Mid Waterproof Boot builds on 5.11’s A.T.L.A.S. (All Terrain Load Assistance System) foundation with some significant upgrades. The addition of Tac Dry® waterproof membrane protection transforms this from a capable work boot into an all-weather performer. The waterproof breathable mesh upper uses welded TPU panels for durability while maintaining flexibility. Inside, you’ll find 5.11’s dual-layer approach to cushioning: Echo high rebound foam in the forefoot paired with Force shock-absorbing foam in the heel, all sitting atop an Ortholite footbed.

  • Construction: Waterproof breathable mesh with TPU welded panels
  • Waterproofing: Tac Dry + BBP membrane
  • Toe Protection: 3D molded rubber toe cap
  • Sole: Full rubber with ASTM slip and oil resistance
  • Support: Removable A.T.L.A.S. support plate
  • Cushioning: Dual density PU midsole with Echo and Force foam

At $165, you’re paying a $15 premium over the non-waterproof version. After eleven months of testing, I can confidently say this might be the best fifteen bucks you’ll spend on footwear. The waterproofing isn’t just marketing – it’s a genuine quality-of-life improvement that you’ll appreciate every time you encounter wet conditions.

“Built to take on any shift for any job. The A/T™ Mid Waterproof has a 3D molded rubber toe and Tac Dry® + BBP to keep your feet protected and dry. The slip- and oil-resistant outsole gives you a safe and stable footing in your work environment while the All Terrain Load Assistance System (A.T.L.A.S.) technology gives you support on those long shifts when you have heavy loads to carry. On the inside, you have the support you need and comfort you want from the Ortholite® footbed, Force Foam® heel, and Echo Foam™ forefoot.”

First Impressions: 5.11 Tactical A/T Mid Waterproof Boot

Out of the box, these boots have a slightly puffier appearance than their non-waterproof siblings – something I initially found concerning. However, this resolves itself after about two weeks of wear as the boots settle into their intended shape. The build quality is immediately apparent, with clean seams and solid construction throughout.

Testing Experience: 5.11 Tactical A/T Mid Waterproof Boot

Over eleven months of consistent use, these boots have revealed some interesting characteristics. The waterproofing isn’t just effective – it’s durable. Whether splashing through puddles or navigating wet conditions, my feet have stayed consistently dry. The membrane also adds a bit of heat retention, but not enough to cause overheating issues, even during warmer months.

Durability has been notably different from the standard version, in both positive and negative ways. The exterior has proven remarkably resilient – none of the peeling or wear issues I’ve seen with non-waterproof versions around the six-month mark. However, the interior heel area showed wear faster than expected, though this might be related to my larger-than-average “clown feet” as I call them.

The A.T.L.A.S. support system performs identically to the non-waterproof version, providing solid support for long days on your feet or when carrying heavy loads. The dual-density foam setup continues to provide good cushioning even after months of daily wear.

One unexpected benefit: the waterproof version maintains its appearance better over time. Without moisture constantly penetrating the material, the boots keep their shape and finish longer, making them look more professional even after months of hard use.

Final Thoughts: 5.11 Tactical A/T Mid Waterproof Boot

After nearly a year of testing, I can definitively say the waterproof version of the A/T Mid Boot is the way to go. The minimal price increase over the standard version is more than justified by the additional capability and durability you get in return. While the interior heel wear is worth noting, the overall performance, especially the excellent waterproofing and improved external durability, makes these a compelling choice for anyone needing a versatile boot that can handle both professional environments and outdoor conditions. Put simply: I’ll never go back to the non-waterproof version.
