Audi RS e-tron GT EV units Bathurst lap report

Audi has taken its high-performance RS e-tron GT for some hot laps in a special demonstration run at this year’s Bathurst 12 Hour endurance race, and now claims it has set the fastest lap for an electric production vehicle.

German Audi Sport driver and current official lap record holder Christopher Mies was at the wheel of the unmodified Audi RS e-tron GT, and clocked a lap time of 2:28.15.

Although Audi claims it has set the fastest lap around Mount Panorama for an electric production vehicle, it won’t count officially as it wasn’t conducted during a racing session.

A similar thing happened when Jenson Button lapped Mount Panorama in a McLaren-Mercedes MP4-23 in 1:48.8.

As noted above, the current official lap record belongs to Mr Mies, who set a 1:59.210 in the 2018 Challenge Bathurst sprint behind the wheel of an Audi R8 LMS Ultra.

“The acceleration is quicker than my GT3 car,” said Mr Mies after completing the demonstration run in the RS e-tron GT.

“I was surprised at just how quick the car is able to punch out of the corners.”

The Audi e-tron GT is now available at Australian dealers, with local buyers skewing towards the hotter RS variant.

The electric grand tourer shares its J1 platform with the Porsche Taycan, and in flagship guise features a dual-motor all-wheel drive powertrain.

In boost mode, the Audi RS e-tron GT produces a total system output of 475kW of power and 830Nm of torque.

Audi claims the RS e-tron GT can do the 0-100km/h sprint in 3.3 seconds, and flat out you’ll be electronically limited to 250km/h.
