It’s hard to walk more than a few miles on a long trail without encountering a version of the Exos. Osprey’s comfy suspension, durable construction, and well-thought-out storage make it a go-to choice for backpackers every hiking season.
I like the 48L version for a good middle ground between weight and storage capacity, but you can go up or down in volume as your needs warrant. Unfortunately, the Exos Pro 55, which earned a spot in GearJunkie’s Best Ultralight Backpacks roundup, is already sold out. Osprey Ozone 4-Wheel Carry-On 38L: 25% Off
You could do worse than buy your luggage from a brand best known for backpacking gear. The same people making packs that can stand up to 5 months of thru-hiking are likely to do a good job making carry-ons. Now that you’ve got a few bags, it’s time to worry about internal organization. Osprey’s waterproof silnylon stuff sacks are on sale in a range of sizes for 30% off. The 12L size is about right for a food bag on a three-night trip, but if you want more noms than that, you can always go up to a 20L. Just don’t submerge these guys — that rolltop closure can only handle so much.
