Volkswagen is prepping two new affordable electric vehicles for the latter half of this decade, teasing an upcoming crossover which will accompany the production version of the ID.2all concept.
As reported by Autocar, the new compact electric crossover model will be to the ID.2 what the T-Cross is to the current Polo, and is expected to launch in 2026 with a price tag of under €30,000 ($49,224).
It will be based on the same MEB Entry dedicated electric platform as the ID.2, and will be assembled alongside its hatchback sibling as well as the Cupra Raval and upcoming Skoda equivalent in Spain.
The accompanying teaser image shows a shadowy side profile teaser of the new mode’s design, which sports a very similar profile to the ID.2all concept – no doubt the two with have a strong family resemblance.
Autocar reports the new model will be previewed in concept form in 2024, with the production version to be shown in 2025 ahead of a 2026 market launch, “a few months after the ID.2”.
Andreas Mindt, newly-appointed head of design at Volkswagen, told the British publication the new crossover wears a “safe, confident, bold” design that is “simple, like the ID.2all”.
It’s unclear what the new vehicle will be called, as CEO Thomas Schafer has gone on record to say the numerical badging of the ID.2 will be phased out in the coming years with legacy nameplates to remain – i.e. Golf, Tiguan and Passat.
Further details are scant at this stage, but given the similarities between the T-Cross and Polo, we can logically anticipate the new ID. SUV to share plenty with the ID.2 (or whatever it will be called).
The ID.2all Concept was revealed earlier this year, with the production version promising an “inside as spacious as a Golf, but outside as cute and small as a Polo”. The concept measures in at just 4050mm long.
VW is targeting a WLTP driving range of up to 450 kilometres, with a front-mounted electric motor putting out 166kW. Zero to 100km/h is claimed to take under 7.0 seconds, which isn’t far off the existing Polo GTI hot hatch.
Autocar reports 38kWh and 56kWh battery packs will be available in the new crossover companion to the ID.2, with the larger battery capable of 125kW DC fast charging.
Inside, the ID.2all Concept featured a 10.9-inch digital driver’s display and a 12.9-inch infotainment system. VW has reportedly pledged to remove glue and hard plastics from its next-generation interiors, part of its strategy to up material quality and reduce the environmental impact of its vehicles.
