Ford F-Collection #1 for fifteenth straight 12 months, Toyota RAV4 threatens Ram Pickup for #2 – Finest Promoting Vehicles Weblog

The new light vehicle market in Canada is up a robust 12.8% year-on-year in 2023 to 1,708,906 unifts after a nightmarish 2022 result which was the lowest in 13 years. Passenger cars edge up 3.2% to 15.7% share while light trucks gain 14.6% to a record 84.3% share. The groups ranking gives a little insight into why Ford has refused to communicate monthly or even quarterly data, opting instead for annual updates. General Motors (+15.4%) overtakes Ford Motor (-0.2%) for the title with over 23,000 units more. Toyota Motor (+13.6%) also gains a little share in third place, distancing Hyundai-Kia (+11%) and Stellantis (-6.3%) both camping on their 2022 ranking but underperforming. In contrast Honda Canada (+20.7%) and the VW Group (+27.5%) both post fantastic results. 

Ford (+0.2%) however retains the brands top spot with over 233,000 sales vs. 196,000 for #2 Toyota (+12%). Chevrolet (+18.4%) rallies back up ahead of a weak Hyundai (+2.8%) and a strong Honda (+22.5%). GMC (+10.4%) holds steady at #6 just as Nissan (+20%) and Kia (+24.2%) both take advantage of a struggling Ram (-2.5%) to step up to #7 and #8 respectively. Volkswagen (+35.8%) scores the biggest gain in the Top 13 and climbs two spots on last year to #10, while Mazda (+17.6%) and Subaru (+24.9%) also very strong just below. Unsurprisingly, Tesla (+67.4%) scores the best performance among mainstream brands, with Mitsubishi (+61.6%) and Buick (+44.2%) standing out.

Model-wise, the Ford F-Series (+7.4%) trails the market but easily wins the year for the 15th consecutive time (no interruption since 2009). It is also the best-selling pickup in the country for the 58th straight year. The Ram Pickup (-0.6%) is in trouble and only hangs onto the 2nd spot for 569 sales above a surging Toyota RAV4 (+33.6%). The GMC Sierra (+14.1%) is back above its twin the Chevrolet Silverado (stable), making it four pickups in the Top 5 like last year. The Honda CR-V (+62.5%) catches up on lost time and passes the Toyota Corolla (-14.6%). Despite a heavy fall, the Corolla repeats at #1 in the passenger car segment with the Honda Civic (-6.5%), leader for 24 consecutive years before 2022, ends the year just 457 sales below. The Tesla Model Y (+192.5%) is up 40 spots to #11, with the Subaru Crosstrek (+48%) up 8 to #12, the Nissan Rogue (+32.4%) up six to #9 and the Hyundai Tucson (+19.3%) up four to #10. The VW Taos (+55.4%) advances to #24 but ranked #7 over Q4.
