[SHOT Show 2024] Keltec Launches the SUB2000 GEN3

In a move set to excite firearm enthusiasts, industry leader Keltec has unveiled its highly anticipated SUB2000 GEN3, adding a stir in the market of folding 9mm carbines. This release marks the next generation of the brand’s popular SUB2000 line, and it brings with it a number of notable feature advancements.

The new SUB2000 GEN3 is not only optics-ready but downright modular—with an extended M-LOK accessory rail and picatinny rail running on both the top and bottom of the unit—making it a highly customizable piece. Perhaps most impressively, the carbine’s new folding system allows the unit to be twisted and folded in either direction. This means users have unrestricted choice as to where they want to mount their accessories, without any worry about the folding action hindering their adjustments. This feature is a significant development from previous models, providing an added level of adaptability.

Giving the gun a broad appeal, the GEN3 SUB2000 is compatible with the commonly used G19/G17 magazines. Furthermore, the model’s barrel comes threaded, a thoughtful addition that serves to increase the firearm’s versatility. The pistol carbine carries a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $499, making it competitively priced in a market where cost effectiveness is an important consideration.

On the launch of the SUB2000 GEN3, Keltec forwarded the catchphrase, “Welcome to the fold!” They added, “You’re looking at the third generation of our semi-automatic carbine that folds in half, optics and all. Initially in 9mm, the SUB2000 GEN3 picks up where handguns leave off. Folded, it tucks away nicely in situations where space is limited, but it’s quick to deploy in situations where time is of the essence.”

The GEN3 weighs a lightweight 4.2 lbs and measures 30.45″ in overall length, folding down conveniently to 16.15″. The gun’s twist rate is 1:10, and the trigger pull is measured at a trim five pounds. Notably, the design of the GEN3 is ambidextrous, an essential feature that provides adaptability for a range of users.

Keltec’s SUB2000 GEN3 is now available in the market, and it well demonstrates how, with careful thought and ingenuity, a new version of a product can offer significant improvements over previous models not just in one, but multiple features.
