Breeze Airways provides 1 new metropolis in broader 22-route growth

Breeze Airways announced Portland, Maine, is its newest destination Tuesday. The city is part of a broader 22-route expansion.

Breeze’s Portland service will begin May 17, when it launches the first of four routes there. By June 2, Breeze will be flying nonstop from Portland to Charleston, South Carolina; Norfolk, Virginia; Pittsburgh; and Tampa.

Breeze is the startup budget carrier launched in May 2021 by David Neeleman, the serial aviation entrepreneur who also helped launch JetBlue, Canada’s WestJet and Brazil’s Azul. His latest carrier’s business model is predicated on adding nonstop flights on routes where passengers must currently connect.

“Portland is our first Maine destination and a great addition to the route network,” Neeleman said in a statement. “We’re always looking for new routes that people are traveling today but can’t get there nonstop.”

Beyond Portland, Breeze added a mix of new routes across 19 other cities.

Other cities gaining the newest service in Tuesday’s announcement were Pittsburgh and Providence, Rhode Island. Each landed Breeze flights to four new cities.

In-depth: Neeleman says Breeze will use a ‘see how it goes’ approach to succeed. And business class — eventually

Also among the additions are two new cross-country flights from Los Angeles: Breeze will now connect to Jacksonville, Florida, and Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina.
