Delta Air Lines beginning Tuesday raised its fees for
checked bags for most U.S.-originating domestic and short-haul international
routes, the carrier confirmed. The checked-bag increase is the first for the
carrier since 2018, according to Delta, and it applies to tickets purchased on
or after March 5.
The fee for a first checked bag is now $35, up from $30, and
the fee for a second checked bag is $45 up from $40. Delta SkyMiles Medallion
members; customers in First Class, Delta Premium Select or Delta One seats; and
those with eligible co-branded Delta SkyMiles American Express cards “will
continue to receive their allotment of complimentary checked bags.”
According to Delta. Active military personnel also are exempt, per the
carrier’s website.
Delta’s move follows increases made by several other major
U.S. carriers, beginning in January with Alaska Airlines. JetBlue increased
fees in early February. After
American Airlines raised its fees on Feb. 20, United
Airlines followed suit a week later.
Southwest Airlines does not charge for checked bags.
