Straightforward and Hearty Apple Raisin Oatmeal Pie Recipe with Walnuts

A delicious way to enjoy apples is always with a warm, homemade apple pie from the oven such as with this old-fashioned recipe for apple raisin oatmeal pie. Imagine gently spiced apple slices in a tender, flaky crust with oatmeal, raisins, and chopped walnuts added to the filling, moderately sweetened with brown and white sugars for a delightful flavor twist. And the best part is how easy this hearty and unique apple oatmeal pie is that I’m about to share with you as well as tips for the best pie ever.

Why You’ll Want to Make This Fruit Pie

This recipe offers incredible taste that singles it out from a classic apple pie. This intriguing flavor from the combination of apples, raisins, walnuts, and oatmeal with how they mingle together with the spices and two different types of sugars is one that certainly delivers something extra.

The second reason is this is an easy pie to make, especially if you use my oil pie crust recipe. You’re basically just be peeling the apples, slicing, and mixing in the other ingredients before loading your pie shell or shells.

Thirdly, I use olive oil or canola oil instead of shortening or butter for limiting bad fats. To keep this recipe as healthy as possible, I also don’t overly sweeten it and use one cup of total sugar to about five cups of apples and one-half cups of raisins. The oatmeal and chopped nuts also contribute added protein and fiber for more of a nourishing dessert.

Fourthly, you can make this hearty apple raisin oatmeal pie with walnuts ahead to serve later.

The fifth reason is you can make one big, ten-inch pie or two smaller, eight-inch pies.

Tips for the Best Nutty Apple Pie

Instead of lining my pie crust with sliced, raw apples and the other filling ingredients, I like to cook them in the microwave with the sugar, flour and spices for about twelve minutes first to soften the apples up a bit. This trick shortens the pie’s baking time.

Adding about two tablespoons of flour to coat the apples helps the filling from juicing out in the oven. It also contributes a slight thickness to prevent a watery filling.

If you use my foolproof oil pie crust, then double the recipe whether you’re baking a large ten-inch pie or two, smaller eight-inch pies.

Try this oatmeal raisin walnut apple pie recipe because it is sensational and so unusual. Please if do make my recipe, share it with your family and friends and do come back to my blog for more.

  1. Prepare your pie crust and line your well-greased 10-inch pie pan or two, smaller eight-inch pie pans.
  2. Mix the sliced apples, sugars, spices, and flour together and mix to thoroughly coat the apples in a large mixing bowl.
  3. Transfer the ingredients to a microwave container and cover.
  4. Cook the apple mixture for six minutes, take out and stir before returning to the microwave for another six minutes. This should be enough time to soften them somewhat. However, this depends on the thickness of the apples you slice.
  5. Once the apples softened somewhat, you will stir in the raisins, oatmeal and walnuts to the other ingredients and mix the filling again.
  6. Transfer to your pie shell or pie shells and add the filling.
  7. Cover the top crust. Make sure to slit the top to allow the steam to escape.
  8. Bake in a 400-degree oven for about 10-minutes, then lower the temperature to 350 for an additional 30 minutes or so, depending on how your oven is regulated and the size of the apple pieces you cut. Stab with a slender knife to see how soft the apples are for determining doneness.
  9. Serve this apple raisin pie warm or cold.
