Strawberry Margarita – A Lovely Mess

It’s margarita season! This Strawberry Margarita recipe is so flavorful, fresh and easy to make at home. A twist on the classic margarita, this recipe uses fresh strawberry puree, limes, tequila, orange liqueur and a fresh strawberry garnish to create the perfect drink. You will love the sweet and tart flavor. It tastes SO fresh.

More tequila cocktails: Paloma, Tequila Sunrise, Ranch Water, Mexican Mule, Mexican Candy Shot.

Ingredients in a Strawberry Margarita

  • Silver Tequila – Choose a mid-priced quality tequila blanco.
  • Orange Liqueur – Such as Cointreau, Grand Marnier or Triple Sec.
  • Fresh Lime Juice – Freshly squeezed is so worth it for this recipe.
  • Agave Nectar – For added sweetness.
  • Strawberry Puree – *Easy recipe below
  • Fresh Strawberries – For garnish (optional)
  • Salt – For rim (optional). I like to use margarita salt, sea salt or kosher salt (anything that is flaky will work—avoid ionized salt for a rim).

The best glassware for a margarita on the rocks is a double old fashioned glass. Here’s a link to the exact glasses I used.

Instructions for making Strawberry Margaritas

Begin by salting the rim of your cocktail glass (optional). I like to use margarita salt with honey for a nice strong salted rim.

In a cocktail shaker, combine tequila, orange liqueur, fresh lime juice, agave and strawberry purée with ice. Shake for 10-15 seconds.

Pour the mixture into your rimmed glass over fresh ice. Garnish with a fresh strawberry or a lime wedge on the rim (optional).

Strawberry Purée Recipe

In a blender or food processor, combine 12 ounces fresh berries (we do not recommend frozen strawberries for this recipe as the texture is more watery and not as flavorful), 2 tablespoons white granulated sugar and 1 tablespoon lemon or lime juice. Blend until the texture is puréed. You can store your purée in an airtight jar in the fridge for 2-3 days before using.

Tips for Making

  • If you want to skip the strawberry purée step, you can muddle some fresh strawberries with simple syrup in the bottom of your glass before making the same recipe (minus the purée)—kind of like the Strawberry Mojito. I personally really loved the texture and flavor of the purée and consider the step worth the effort!
  • When it comes to margaritas, I always use fresh squeezed lime juice. It’s worth it.
  • If you don’t have tequila blanco on hand, you can substitute for reposado tequila or gold tequila. You can even sub in mezcal if you wish.
