Fishermen are always in search of the next best thing when it comes to lures and tackle. It’s often been said that fishing lures are made to catch fishermen instead of fish. I find this to be 100% correct. So when I picked up a pack of Flashin Assassin Jig Heads at Academy Sporting Goods, I had that feeling of instant regret as I walked out of the door.
I mean, how much better can you make a jig head right?
I had the chance to try out these new jigheads on Bayou Liberty in Southeast, LA. The bayou is known for producing big bream so I figured I would put these jigheads to the test to see how they would do. I was accompanied by my friend Ray Miller. He has been a lifelong bream and crappie fisherman so I thought this would be a good opportunity to gauge these Flashin Assassin Jig Heads.
We launched at daybreak and headed down the cypress-laden bayou. The conditions were perfect; a light breeze from the south with partly cloudy skies. Our first stop was a shoreline with cypress knees and lilies. Having fished with Miller before, I knew the routine of trying different color baits to find out which one the fish preferred. I tied on a Bobby Garland Crystal Shad and threaded it onto a 1/32 oz. White Flashin Assassin jig head. Miller was using a black head rigged about 2 feet under a small cork. As we fished the shoreline the action was immediate. On Miller’s second cast, his cork shot under and he retrieved an 8-inch bluegill.
I soon joined in and we both began to catch bream. The bite was so good that the color of the jighead didn’t seem to matter, however, the two small holographic strips that protruded out of the lead head seemed to affect the fish as they were striking more aggressively than normal. At the end of the day, we counted 82 bream which was a mixture of goggle-eye, bluegill, and chinquapin. It was the best bream fishing trip I’ve ever had. I have to admit, one thing that I was worried about was the mylar strips breaking off of the jighead but the strips stayed connected and didn’t rip or break.
I was extremely pleased with these jig heads and can honestly say that they passed the first test. My next adventure will be chasing crappie and I can’t wait to give them a try on that trip.
Flashin Assassin makes both freshwater and saltwater-sized heads starting as small as 1/32 oz and going up to 3/8 oz. The steel shank jig heads come in a pack of 5 for freshwater and for saltwater, they come with 3 in a pack.
