What it is actually like to remain on the Tokyo DisneySea Resort MiraCosta

If you’ve ever had so much fun in a Disney park that you wished you could extend the magic and fantasy overnight, then the Tokyo DisneySea Hotel MiraCosta is the right Tokyo Disney hotel for you.

The Tokyo DisneySea Hotel MiraCosta opened in 2001 alongside the fan-favorite Tokyo DisneySea theme park, providing grand, Italian-inspired decor and accommodations harkening to the Roman Empire.

The hotel is integrated into the park’s landscape (you can even enter it directly from Tokyo DisneySea) and has ocean-inspired decor to maintain the sense of a park visit. It even depicts ports from the park in the eight-sided mural above the lobby. If that’s not enough magic, from some rooms and public areas in the hotel, you can gaze onto the Tokyo DisneySea harbor and even watch the “Sea of Dreams” nighttime show.

What is the Tokyo DisneySea Hotel MiraCosta?

The Tokyo DisneySea Hotel MiraCosta exudes a luxurious, mythical and magical Italian seascape from the moment you pull up in the circular driveway. If you arrive by Disney monorail, which easily connects to trains coming in from Tokyo, the station is immediately adjacent to the hotel.

Within these walls, there are 502 rooms spread across Tuscany-, Venice- and Porto Paradiso-designated sections, all colorful and distinct in their own way. There is also a private entrance and exit from Tokyo DisneySea for hotel guests so you can stay immersed in the stories of the sea.

Whereas some new theme park hotels are criticized for feeling like generic chain hotels, this one would never face such accusations. The over-the-top scale and immersive environment this hotel creates will have you wanting to dive into Tokyo DisneySea and get swept away in the adventure.

How much the Tokyo DisneySea Hotel MiraCosta costs and how to book it

The Tokyo DisneySea Hotel MiraCosta has been the most expensive hotel at Tokyo Disney since it opened. That might soon change with the opening of the Tokyo DisneySea Fantasy Springs Hotel, but the MiraCosta will continue to sit toward the top of the Deluxe hotel pecking order at Tokyo Disney, in part because of its location within the park.

You can book stays here starting four months from your travel date, and you need to take that booking timeline seriously as popular room types, such as those with the Porto Paradiso view of the harbor, sell out almost instantaneously.

Room rates for the Tokyo DisneySea Hotel MiraCosta start around $400 per night, given the current favorable exchange rate, and suites have starting rates that range from $1,500 to $3,000 per night. However, not all rooms at the MiraCosta come with a view of Tokyo DisneySea, so be sure you book a room that specifies a park view if that is important to you. It will typically cost a little bit more than a non-view room, though it’s worth it.

The Tokyo DisneySea AquaSphere-view option on the Tuscany side is likely to overlook the rotating globe at the park’s entrance. The canal-view choice on the Venice side will give you a look into that portion of the park. And, as previously mentioned, the most-coveted view is in the Porto Paradiso section with a peek at the main harbor.

Rooms at the Tokyo DisneySea Hotel MiraCosta

I have stayed at almost every Disney World hotel, but the corridor leading to my room at the Tokyo DisneySea Hotel Miracosta had to be the most intensely themed hallway I’ve seen with fantastical murals of painted seascapes.

The over-the-top decor continued into our room, which was a three-bed Tuscany room with scenes of Capitano Mickey (Italian for “captain”) and his olden-times voyages with friends. Our room cost $450 per night and did not have a park view, as we missed the four-month booking window by a few weeks.

As is common in Japanese hotels, the single beds had firm mattresses, but it was very practical to have three little beds in one room. Like at the Tokyo Disneyland Hotel, you can borrow pajamas — just ask at the front desk if you’d like kids sizes.

I loved the zodiac-inspired mural on the ceiling, but while the room was quite charming, it bordered on being too much for me, especially when combined with the ornate, antique-feeling furnishings.

The bathroom had a single sink vanity, but the toilet and the shower/tub combo were located in two areas separate from the sink, which was a smart design for a family.

What we ate at the Tokyo DisneySea Hotel MiraCosta

The Tokyo DisneySea Hotel MiraCosta has two table-service restaurants, Oceano and Silk Road Garden, along with a lobby lounge, Bellavista Lounge, and a pool bar.

On our first night, we were accommodated at Silk Road Garden very quickly without a reservation to enjoy the “East-meets-West Chinese” menu. Shown below is the most impressive $19 kids meal I have ever seen, with dumplings, corn soup, fried chicken, fried rice and almond jelly, among other dishes. It wasn’t all food my 8-year-old was familiar with or enjoyed, but it impressed me … and the fried rice was a hit.

I had a seafood and veggies dish for about $31, which was fine, though the spring rolls and fried rice would have done the trick for me, too, especially since this was our first night in Japan and we were all about bleary-eyed.

The next morning, we enjoyed the buffet breakfast at Oceano, a Mediterranean-themed restaurant. We made the earliest reservation possible to eat before the park opened and found it to be both efficient and tasty, with something for everyone. The buffet is priced at $25 for adults, $15 for kids ages 7 to 12 and $11 for children between 4 and 6, and it offers a mix of Japanese and Western options, including eggs, bacon, pastries and noodles, which meant my whole family was full and happy to start the day.

There is also a limited room service menu at the hotel, but reserve your breakfast delivery time the day before if you want to secure an early slot before the park opens.

Amenities and things to do

  • The hotel has a small shop called MickeyAngelo with market items and a limited selection of Disney souvenirs.
  • The indoor pool is open year-round. The summer-only outdoor pool is scheduled to open in mid-July. There are fees for both.
  • There is a smoking lounge.
  • Luggage transfer service is free if you are moving to another Tokyo Disney hotel.
  • Guests enjoy 15-minute early entry access (called “Happy Entry”) each morning to both Tokyo Disney theme parks. Line up for the service at least 30 minutes before the scheduled Happy Entry time so you can arrange your daily rides in the app and avoid long lines. Starting June 6, Happy Entry will not be available for Tokyo Disneyland on select dates when staying at the Tokyo DisneySea Hotel MiraCosta until further notice, so check the website carefully to determine eligible dates for that park.
  • The hotel has private, direct access to Tokyo DisneySea. However, this entrance is not available until one hour after the park opens, so you can’t use it for the morning Happy Entry perk.
  • The MiraCosta has accessible superior rooms with a piazza view. These rooms come with wide spaces for maneuvering personal devices, grab rails by the toilet and the bathtub, and no partition into the bathroom. For more details and to ensure you can reserve a room that meets your requirements, contact the hotel directly.

Insider tips for staying at the Tokyo DisneySea Hotel MiraCosta

  • For an easy breakfast, buy pastries from Mamma Biscotti’s Bakery while you’re still in Tokyo DisneySea, as other than the small gift shop, there isn’t an easy grab-and-go food option available at the Tokyo DisneySea Hotel MiraCosta.
  • Book your stay four months out, and spend the extra cash for a view of the park (if available).
  • Make sure you are in the right line for morning Happy Entry. Just show your paper Happy Entry ticket to any cast members working the pre-opening lines to get pointed to the right queue.
  • Hotel guests are guaranteed the ability to purchase tickets to the Tokyo Disney parks while staying, so don’t stress if your credit card gives you trouble buying them online ahead of time.

Bottom line

For a visit to Tokyo DisneySea, you historically couldn’t get a better-located hotel than the Tokyo DisneySea Hotel MiraCosta. However, the MiraCosta may have some competition on its hands when the Tokyo DisneySea Fantasy Springs Hotel opens in the summer of 2024, as the new hotel will help guests with priority access to the park, unlike the MiraCosta.

We enjoyed the Tokyo DisneySea Hotel MiraCosta overall, but we actually preferred our time at the Tokyo Disneyland Hotel. The decor in the MiraCosta rooms felt a bit dated and overwhelming, and the lack of a view into the park from our room defeated the purpose of staying there. The lack of easy-to-grab food like the Tokyo Disneyland Hotel offered also made our first night there challenging.

That said, the location of the Tokyo DisneySea Hotel MiraCosta was unquestionably convenient, the theming in public areas was top-notch and the service was perfectly responsive. If you want to (almost) sleep within the Tokyo DisneySea park and never lose sight of the Mount Prometheus volcano, this just might be the hotel for you.
