Amex to open first Centurion Lounge in Japan at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport

American Express is bringing its Centurion Lounge network to Japan.

The issuer shared news with TPG on Wednesday that it would open a Centurion Lounge outpost at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport (HND). The lounge will open in 2025 and will be located on the fourth floor of HND’s Terminal 3.

Amex teased that the lounge will be designed in a Japanese philosophy, with artwork and decor that reflects the locale. The lounge will also showcase great airfield views from the floor-to-ceiling windows. (Hopefully, the windows won’t be pre-tinted to obstruct any planespotting that you might want to do while waiting for your flight.)

The lounge will measure about 7,400 square feet and have seating for around 120 passengers, meaning it’ll be among the smallest Centurion Lounges in the network. That’s bad news for cardmembers who are used to overcrowding and waitlists at Centurion Lounges in the U.S. I’d expect similar waits to enter the club during peak travel periods.

“We’re continuing to expand our Centurion Lounge presence in international airports in popular travel destinations for our Card Members. As we continue to see growth in travel to Japan, especially with Millennials and Gen Z, the Centurion Lounge at Haneda Airport will be an important addition to our global lounge network,” said Audrey Hendley, president of American Express Travel, in a statement that was shared with TPG.

This new Centurion Lounge location will become the issuer’s second in Asia, after the outpost in Hong Kong, and just the third outside the U.S. Amex’s Centurion Lounge in London’s Heathrow Airport (LHR) opened in 2021. Amex rebranded some of its other international lounges as Centurion Lounges, but the London and Hong Kong locations were the only other international spaces designed from the outset for Amex’s most premium cardmembers.

Amex didn’t have any additional details about the new Tokyo lounge, but we’ll update this story as more information becomes available.

Interestingly, Delta Air Lines also recently opened a Sky Club at Haneda during the coronavirus pandemic. Given Amex’s relationship with Delta, perhaps the issuer saw proprietary data that made it decide to bid for lounge space in Tokyo.

Of the other credit card-branded lounges, Chase is the only other issuer with an international location. In fact, the world’s first Sapphire Lounge by The Club opened in Hong Kong in 2022.

The Centurion Lounge network is expected to grow this year with the addition of a new outpost at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) near Washington, D.C. Amex is also working to open an outpost at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), but the opening date hasn’t yet been published.

The new outpost in Newark will be located in the airport’s Terminal A.
