POTD: Gordon Ingram’s Model 6 – Thompson-Inspired Budget Sub Gun

Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! Gordon Ingram designed the Model 6 in 1948 as a .45 ACP submachine gun. The Ordinance Police Company assembled this weapon from 1949 to 1952. However, it looked like a Thompson machine gun, simpler techniques of producing it were employed using stamped sheet metals. Notably, it had an open bolt operation mechanism, a fixed firing pin, and a two-stage trigger for semi and full-auto fire. It was equipped with a thirty-round stick magazine; otherwise, it measures nine inches long in its barrel length while also having an overall length of thirty inches. Primarily conceived as a lower-priced alternative to law enforcement agencies, its production volumes remained limited alongside sales figures being far less than expected. It was followed in 1952 with the Model-7 featuring closed-bolt operation. The initial design that came before his more successful MAC-10 and MAC-11 models is known as the Model-6.

“Originally designed and patented by Gordon Ingram in 1948 and later produced in very limited numbers by the Police Ordnance Company. This was one of the newer type submachine guns designed by Gordon Ingram. Later, he gained fame by designing the very successful MAC-10 and MAC 11 SMGs. Although this weapon is similar in outward appearance to the Thompson sub-machine gun, it is very different and uses a machine bolt and barrel assembly with various stamped sheet metal parts including the receiver similar to the MP40 and STEN submachine gun concepts. “
