Alabama Slammer – A Lovely Mess

The Alabama Slammer is a famous 1970s cocktail made with Southern Comfort, sloe gin, amaretto liqueur and orange juice. The Alabama Slammer is also sometimes called the Southern Slammer. You only need four ingredients to make this easy cocktail. It’s the perfect summer drink.

This tasty drink can be served as a slow sipper cocktail or divvied up into shot glasses and served as a shooter. This drink originally comes from the University of Alabama.

Alabama Slammer Ingredients

  • Southern Comfort – A fruit-flavored whiskey-based liqueur infused with spice
  • Sloe Gin – A berry pink gin-based liqueur.
  • Amaretto Liqueur – An almond-flavored liqueur.
  • Orange Juice – Freshly squeezed orange juice is our top choice. Citrus flavor balances this recipe.

The best glassware to serve an Alabama Slammer in is a tall drinking glass or a highball glass. I found these cute ribbed glasses (similar ribbed glassware). I also used paper straws, which are so cute for cocktail recipes.

Instructions for an Alabama Slammer Recipe

In a cocktail shaker with ice, combine Southern Comfort, sloe gin, amaretto and orange juice. Shake for 10-15 seconds until well chilled.

Strain and pour into a glass filled with fresh ice.

Garnish with an orange slice and a maraschino cherry. Serve immediately.

Tips for Making

  • Batch Recipe – Increase this recipe 6x to make a pitcher recipe that serves six cocktails. You can do this in advance and store it in the fridge. I recommend not adding ice until you are ready to serve so you don’t dilute your drink.
  • Lemon Juice – If you find this recipe a bit too sweet, try adding some fresh lemon juice for more acidity, tartness and balance.
  • Variations – One variation of this recipe is to add a dash of grenadine to make it bright red (the color of the University of Alabama). Just stir to achieve a bright red color or add the grenadine into the cocktail shaker. Another popular variation is to divvy the recipe into shot glasses and serve it as a shooter instead of a cocktail.
