Inspired by the sonic landscapes of The Avalanches, Jungle, The Weeknd, and Breakbot, Sleepy Tom‘s most recent offering, an EP titled “The Rush,” is a vibrant showcase of his multifaceted talent. Following the success of his single “Golden” featuring Cadence Weapon, “The Rush” is a six-track exploration of sound, marked by incredible rhythms and dynamic collaborations.
The EP kicks off with a tantalizing intro, setting the stage for the sonic adventure that follows. “Golden” makes a triumphant return, its magnetic energy still captivating. The title track “The Rush,” a funky fusion of sounds, features the vocal talents of Thandi Phoenix and Manga Saint Hilare, creating a dance floor-ready anthem. “My Girl,” a collaboration with Fur Trade, transports listeners back to the disco era with its infectious groove.
Sleepy Tom’s versatility shines on “Fallin’,” a dreamy blend of chillwave and electro-pop featuring Dacey’s ethereal vocals. The EP concludes with “Divination,” a sonic masterpiece crafted alongside Hotel Mira. This track showcases Sleepy Tom’s ability to seamlessly blend intricate synths with captivating rhythms, creating a truly immersive experience.
As Sleepy Tom himself puts it, “The original demo for ‘The Rush’ was titled ‘Burning’—likely because it was written in mid-July, when my apartment reaches 35 degrees Celsius. I sent it to Thandi after hearing her song ‘Hot Sauce’—I sense a theme here—and her vocals fit effortlessly! After rearranging a few parts, there was room for a rap verse. Manga smashed it, completing my most international track to date. Commonwealth, stand up!”
