Uber Permits Inexperienced EV-Solely Choice in 40-Plus Cities

Uber now has enough electric-vehicle drivers on its platform to enable an EV-only option in more than 40 cities globally through Uber Green, the company announced Tuesday. Riders will be able to choose an EV for about the same price as an UberX.

Another new feature allows riders to set a preference in the app to be matched with an EV anytime one is nearby, according to Uber.

There currently are more than 182,000 EVs on the platform, and Uber drivers are adopting EVs five times faster than the average motorist in the U.S., Canada and Europe, according to a blog post by Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi.

Overall, Uber Green is available in more than 200 cities globally and offers both hybrids and EVs.

Uber Adds NY Shuttle

In addition, Uber on Friday announced it had launched an airport shuttle between New York’s LaGuardia Airport and Manhattan. Each one-way ride costs $18, and customers can reserve up to four seats up to seven days in advance.

Rides must be reserved in advance via the Uber app, and it is not possible to board the shuttle without prior reservation. Each rider is allowed one personal item which must fit on their lap or under their seat and one piece of luggage weighing up to 50 pounds, according to Uber.

There are two routes with fixed stops between the airport and Midtown Manhattan. One route stops at LaGuardia’s Terminal C on the arrivals level, Terminal B on arrivals level 1 near pillar 5, Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan and the New York Port Authority. The second route stops at Terminal C, Terminal B and Penn Station.

Shuttles run every 30 minutes between 5 a.m. and 11 p.m., according to Uber.
