The ’80s called and said, “Let’s party.” Toyota answered the call, chopped the top off a 2025 4Runner, removed two doors, painted it purple with some wave graphics, and added a couple of surfboards. Toyota is bringing the open-air spirit of the first-gen 4Runner to the annual SEMA show with the TRD Surf Concept.
“The 2025 4Runner reminded me of the original, with its rugged look and powerhouse 4cyl engine. I knew it had the potential to be the ultimate beach cruiser,” said Marty Schwerter, lead builder and Director of Operations at Toyota’s Motorsports Technical Center.
“We wanted to create something that would resonate today while paying homage to the past. The removable top was a must, just like the original, and we made sure it’s as functional as it is stylish.”
Toyota 4Runner TRD Surf Concept
This concept vehicle started life as a 2025 4Runner TRD Limited. It then was converted from a four-door to a two-door and gained a removable hard top. Toyota says the new hard top was designed to be easily removed and installed by just one person.
Under the hood of the 4Runner TRD Surf Concept is the iForce 2.4L turbocharged engine, combined with an eight-speed automatic transmission — yes, we would have loved to see a manual trans as well. A full-time 4WD system should help ensure this beach cruiser doesn’t get stuck in the sand. A custom exhaust should wake up the sound of the little four-cylinder as well.
The build has big fender flares and a wider track width, which extend the vehicle 2 inches on each side. This is to help contain the massive 37-inch BFG all-terrain tires wrapped around 17×8.5-inch custom TRD wheels. Long-travel suspension, steering upgrades, custom front axles, and a Tundra rear-end housing let you know this machine is ready for a beach party.
Because the top comes off, this custom 4Runner has a weatherproofed interior, including soft marine flooring. Because it lost two doors, the front passenger seat flips forward to allow access to the rear seats, even when the top is on.
Add a rear roll-bar hoop and a roof rack on the removable top, and you’ve got a beach wagon that is modern, nostalgic, and very usable.
