Until now, you had to switch to a different app, like Google Maps, for turn-by-turn directions when navigating routes within the onX Offroad app. Now, onX Navigation brings turn-by-turn directions, both audio and visual, within the app, even when off-grid and far away from cell service.

“We are thrilled to offer our users a solution that allows them to explore confidently without relying on external tools. With onX Navigation, our users will have a more integrated, reliable, and enjoyable experience, helping them focus on the trail ahead and the adventure at hand.

“With the addition of turn-by-turn voice commands, they can stay focused on the trail when conditions and terrain go from easy to extreme, or the weather comes in and reduces visibility,” said Val Zolyak, onX Senior Product Manager.

Yes, you heard that right: the new onX Navigation feature provides turn-by-turn directions within the onX Offroad app to just about anywhere. You can now get full directions along custom-built routes, points of interest, or any spot on the map, all within the app.

The new in-app navigation features also work when using onX Offroad through CarPlay and Android Auto.

Also, in Offline Mode within the onX Offroad app on any Apple iOS device, you can now get full directions even when completely off-grid. Yep, no cell service or Wi-Fi is needed to get turn-by-turn directions, even when off-road.

Key Features of onX Navigation (According to onX Offroad):

  • Offroad-specific guidance: Tailored for dirt roads and offroad use, the feature provides detailed driving directions to selected destinations such as waypoints, onX Trail Guide-rated trails, forest roads, and POI such as a lookout or camp spot.
  • Voice commands: Adventurers can rely on audible turn-by-turn directions, allowing them to keep their eyes on the trail.
  • Offline mode (iOS platform only): Turn-by-turn navigation remains fully functional in areas without cell service, thanks to the ability to download maps for offline use.
  • Navigate along user-created routes: Users can build custom routes in advance and receive turn-by-turn directions as they follow these user-designed paths, ensuring they stay on track throughout their adventure.
  • Real-time rerouting: Should users miss a turn, the app will automatically reroute them whether they are within cell range or offline.
  • Multiple map orientations: Users can switch between different map views, such as Landscape, Portrait, North-up lock, tilted perspectives, and top-down views, to suit their navigation preferences.
  • Connected driving experience: The feature is compatible with CarPlay and Android Auto, delivering navigation directly to in-dash displays for a smoother in-vehicle experience, while also allowing users to search for nearby trails and content all from their in-dash screen.

onX Navigation Rollout

The onX Navigation feature is currently “slowly trickling out” to Premium and Elite onX Offroad subscribers “through winter.” That’s tech speak for some people have it now, but everyone should have it shortly, likely in early 2025.
