The European Union has granted its final approval of Korean Air’s merger with Asiana Airlines now that the former has met the conditions set by the European Commission in February, the carrier announced Thursday.
Air Incheon has been approved to purchase Asiana’s freighter business, and Korean low-cost carrier T’way Air has been designated as the “remedy carrier” for the four overlapping European routes: Barcelona, Frankfurt, Paris and Rome, according to Korean Air.
The U.S. Department of Justice is the sole remaining governmental body to approve the Korean Air-Asiana merger, which was announced in November 2020. Korean Air has submitted the EU approval to the DOJ and “plans to complete the transaction by December 2024.”
