52 Weeks of Firsts in Philadelphia

What to Expect

Every week throughout 2026, guests learn about a different “first” that had its roots in Philadelphia, from inventions like bifocals (created by none other than Benjamin Franklin) and pencils with erasers (kudos to inventor Hymen Lipman) to significant locations such as the first hospital (another Franklin first) and the African Methodist Episcopal Church (the oldest parcel of land in the country continuously owned by African Americans), to cultural milestones like the Mother’s Day and Thanksgiving Day parades (yup, they started here, too).

Other Philadelphia firsts slated for celebration in 2026 include the first abolition society, the first flower show, the first women’s medical college, the first Girl Scout cookie sale and the first public protest in support of LGBTQ+ rights.

These events are held at various locations throughout the city where each “first” took place, and feature speakers, a prominent “#1” sculpture, and a Once Upon A Nation story that delves into the history of each innovation.

Speaking of the “#1” sculptures: Think you can find all the #1 sculptures? Don’t miss the city-wide scavenger hunt, where you’ll also learn a bit more about Philly’s innovative past in the process.
