18 Locations With The Finest Breakfast In Amsterdam

For many, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. This rings especially true for tourists as if you want to be at your best when you’re out exploring attractions and landmarks for the day, you need to make sure you’ve taken on enough fuel to last at least until lunch.

If you are going to visit Amsterdam and need to know where you can find the best places to enjoy a light breakfast or a badass brunch, then look no further. Amsterdam is a charming city with tons of great food options – many of which I’ve had the good fortune to sample.

Of course, if you just want to grab a coffee, you won’t be at a loss for choice – “coffeeshops” are an institution here. But for those not in the know, your average Dutch coffeeshop is a far cry from Starbucks. While you may be able to source some excellent coffee and plenty of “vegetables” from an Amsterdam coffeeshop, they don’t typically do a great breakfast.

So where do you grab the grub when it’s time for brekkie? In this post, we’ll provide you with our pick of some of the greatest brunch & breakfast spots in Amsterdam so that you can make the most out of your trip. Expect all sorts of tempting meals like delicious egg dishes, piles of pancakes, refreshing smoothies, and warm coffees that will make for an unforgettable morning meal experience.

So let’s cut right to it; here are our favorite places to grab breakfast bites in town.

Pro-Tips for Breakfast & Brunch in Amsterdam

Amsterdam has many choices for anyone ready to have a good meal. When dining out in Amsterdam there are a few things you should bear in mind:

  • Be sure to check opening times as some places don’t operate all day. Europeans know that it’s okay to switch off sometimes.
  • If you’re a vegan or vegetarian, you’ll find plenty of options. I enjoyed many excellent oat milk lattes last time I was brunch hunting in Amsterdam.
  • Most places are totally cashless now. This was a growing trend that has really been helped along by the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Don’t be put off if there is a waiting list – it’s just part of the experience in this charming city. So take advantage of any waiting list app a restaurant may have. Definitely make reservations if you have a large group.
  • Pancakes are popular here, but you should understand the difference between Dutch and American ones. Dutch pancakes are larger and flatter than their American counterparts. They are much more similar to French crepes. In terms of toppings, Dutch pancake toppings are often mixed inside. I recommend trying them at least once (or more) as they are just as yummy as the American ones and far more versatile.

1. Greenwoods at Keizersgracht and Singel

Addresses: Keizersgracht 465, 1017 DK Amsterdam, Netherlands and Singel 103, 1012 VG Amsterdam, Netherlands

Trust me when I say Greenwoods has a thorough menu that makes it perfect for group outings, and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. I especially loved the full English breakfast and the vegetarian options they had to make it just as full AND English without the meat.

When you come here to eat breakfast, you feel very welcome. My waiter was extremely attentive and answered all my questions about the menu, making it easy to come back a few times and try different things. Go if you are a couple on a brunch date, or just want to hang out with friends.

It’s cozy and comfortable, and the brunch menu options are pretty substantial, ideal if you have picky eaters in your crew. Plus, if you’re a late riser like me, you can hit this place up for the All Day Breakfast. Don’t forget to try the eggs Benedict at least once!

2. Little Collins

Address: Eerste Sweelinckstraat 19F De Pijp, 1073 CL, Amsterdam, Netherlands

Little Collins is a cute cafe started by two Australian friends. This pokey little eatery accepts walk-ins only and is quite a delightful place for an easy brunch.

The menu is small, but the pickings are fabulous. Some real ingenuity has gone into the menu and you are sure to be wowed by what they have on offer. I’ve been a couple of times. The first time I was there, I absolutely loved the Pear French Toast and the hot smoked salmon – kinda a big deal for me as I’ve always been a cold smoked salmon sort of person, but this opened some doors for me. Also, pears and fish? What?! Turns out that’s an amazing combinatioin.

My second visit surpassed the first, which I didn’t think was going to be an easy feat. The portobello risotto was the last dish I tried, and it was utterly delicious. If you love Little Collins, try out their larger, sister location, Collins.

3. MOAK

Addresses: Jodenbreestraat 144, 1011 NS Amsterdam, Netherlands and Ferdinand Bolstraat 11, 1072 LA Amsterdam, Netherlands

If you love American buttermilk pancakes as much as I do, you must make a stop at MOAK (formerly known as MOOK). As noted above, I rated it the best breakfast in Amsterdam for pancakes.

One location is right in the city center, but the restaurant has other brunch spots in the West and De Piip areas. All day (American) pancakes are the draw here — no matter how late you get up, a delicious pancake meal can be on your plate.

One thing to remember is they don’t take reservations. So, if you’re going with a big group of people, you may have to split up over different tables. However, it’s worth it as you enjoy their variety of pancakes and chill atmosphere.

You can work off the generous portions of pancakes as you dance in your seat to the good mix of R&B and hip-hop tunes. The pancakes themselves are delicious and well-cooked. However, the star of the show may be the variety of toppings.

I also enjoyed how I could have a boozy brunch with them one day, thanks to the delicious Mimosa Rose Cocktails, or add a healthy boost with their fresh juices like a ginger shot.

4. Omelegg

Addresses: Nieuwebrugsteeg 24, 1012AH Amsterdam,Netherlands and Ferdinand Bolstraat 143, 1072LH Amsterdam, Netherlands

One of the things that I realized on my breakfast and brunch journeys around the world is that not everyone knows how to make an omelet. How hard could it be? It’s just throwing stuff into a messed-up egg and folding it over, right? As it turns out, it’s hard enough for some. Luckily, this is not the case at the chain of Omelegg restaurants in Amsterdam.

As much as I am a late riser, sometimes I actually do get out early. When I do, Omelegg is open and waiting to serve up an omelet as early as 7:00 am.

I love the Spicy Mariachi omelet that comes with jalapenos, mushrooms, onions, sun-dried tomatoes, coriander, and bell pepper. However, the Pulled Chicken one is my #1 – partly because it’s so hard to find any pulled meats in Europe, and partly because it’s yummy as all heck. In addition to the various savory flavors, there’s a Banana Peanut Butter omelet on the menu for those who want to combine their sweet tooth with their egg craving.

Unfortunately, be prepared to wait in line at times, since the place is so popular, particularly with American tourists. Even if you’re not an omelet person, and even if there is a line, I’d still recommend coming here just for a good egg dish.

There are plenty of varieties to choose from and it’s worth the trip. Along with your eggs, the place also serves some delicious bread and amazing coffee to wake you up.

5. Bakers & Roasters

Addresses: Kadijksplein 16, 1018 AC Amsterdam, Netherlands and Eerste Jacob van Campenstraat 54, 1072 BH Amsterdam, Netherlands

While looking for a Cafe in Amsterdam for brunch, check out Bakers & Roasters, a New Zealand and Brazilian-inspired cozy spot. From fresh fruit salads to fluffy pancakes, there’s a delicious range of options to try in the De Pijp brunch spot.

The service is always on point, so it’s worth putting yourself on the online waitlist for a table. After one meal here, I quickly realized the long queue to dine here isn’t just because the place is so small; it’s also because the food is amazing.

I really enjoyed the gluten-free options like the coconut gluten-free French toast. They even have vegan scrambled eggs, and the American pancakes are the right amount of fluffy. Make sure you are hungry as the portions are generous.

By 8:30 am, this brunch location is ready to serve up some yummy eggs Benedict, and other delights. Don’t forget to try the homemade cakes either: they are to die for.

6. Lavinia GOOD FOOD

Address: Amstelveenseweg 192, Amsterdam, Netherlands

If you prefer healthy food for your breakfast and brunch, Lavinia provides a cozy option in Amsterdam. The Lebanese-inspired cafe is also great for anyone eating brunch on a Halal diet. If you want to get away from the tourists, check out the one located in Amsterdam Zuid.

The decor is beautiful and it’s easy to sit for a while and take it all in. If you enjoy the food here, Lavinia also has locations in other cities now, potentially giving you a new familiar favorite if you’re touring the Netherlands. You may not want to get too precious with your favorite dishes here, as the owner-chef travels the country and is always changing the menu with new and exciting flavors.

In addition to the warm service and cozy decor, there are homemade cakes that I can’t get enough of. There are gluten-free options by way of cakes or pancakes. I highly recommend the banana ones.

On an off day, the service may be slow depending on who is working, but it’s still a nice cozy cafe to grab a healthy brunch and a hot drink.

7. Pluk

Address: Reestraat 19 1016 BM Amsterdam, Netherlands

If you want a cool breakfast cafe near Amsterdam’s canals to take some Instagram-worthy photos, you may want to make a pit stop at Pluk. Honestly, service can be hit or miss, but while you are here, you can enjoy the stunning ambiance of this 2-level cute cafe. In addition to being a cafe, it’s also a boutique.

It’s not my first choice for a hot brunch in the city, but I like to come here sometimes for a light breakfast, a drink, and to peruse. Like many other customers, I love the banana bread and a healthy smoothie bowl. There’s a very good selection of cakes to enjoy and take with you for a quick coffee and breakfast snack on the go.

8. Coffee and Coconuts

Address: CEINTUURBAAN 282-284 Amsterdam, Netherlands

It’s nice when establishments take the time to think about the layout and ambiance of a place. I must say CT Coffee and Coconuts is one of the most beautiful and nicely decorated brunch spots I’ve eaten at in Amsterdam.

They’ve really made good use of the old cinema building that dates back to the 1920s. It’s always fun finding a repurposed historic landmark in Amsterdam. I love how there are three floors to explore and it’s a great breakfast spot to relax with friends.

The food really compliments the decor and the menu has plenty of vegan and vegetarian options. I also like how the food is presented, certainly worthy of a photo op. Since the place gets so busy, you may have a wait for a table at certain times.

I’m a huge fan of anything made with coconut. Needless to say, I went to this place a few times for the coconut drinks. The coconut pancakes were also incredible.

For breakfast, enjoy a smoothie bowl, tacos, and vegan options. This is definitely a go-to spot for me when I’m looking for something special.

9. Drover’s Dog

Address: Drover’s Dog, Heemstedestraat 25, 1059 CX Amsterdam, Netherlands

Drover’s Dog is a very popular spot for breakfast and brunch in Amsterdam, with four locations. It’s another Australian-type eatery with a mixture of light and hearty breakfast and brunch options. The food is always fresh and made with locally sourced ingredients, so you can feel good about what you eat.

Hipsters pay notice, as you’ll be delighted with the menu items like toasted sourdough and smashed avo. When I want a boozy brunch, I love to come here for one of the quality Australian beers.

The veggie breakfast roll is one of my favorite items on the menu. When I need some extra iron, I gladly opt for the popular steak sandwich in all of its meaty goodness.

There have been a couple of times I came in for an early breakfast or brunch, only to come back later the same day for dinner since they are open until 10 pm.

10. Staring at Jacob

Address: 215 Jacob Van Lennepkade, Amsterdam, Netherlands

Staring at Jacob is a cozy cafe where I often go for the banana bread and hearty American-influenced dishes as a matter of habit. If you work online as I do, it’s a great spot to take the laptop while having a bite.

The friendly staff always have impeccable service and kindly answer questions I have about the menu. It can get crowded here, so you may want to play it safe and book a table.

I am a big waffle fan and get to indulge in my craving here. This place cooks a great Chicken & Waffles dish that I’ve had a number of times. One of my favorite things about the place is viewing the namesake, the houseboat “Jacob” outside.

I also enjoy a good cocktail or two here. They have a great Bloody Mary and Mimosa by the pitcher. While the beer selection is small, there are good-quality Japanese and English options.

11. The Breakfast Club

Address: Changiweg 110, 1043 DZ Amsterdam, Netherlands

One thing I love is an all-day breakfast or brunch place. The Breakfast Club is one of the most popular options in Amsterdam, and luckily there are many locations throughout the city. The menu is extensive and delicious, and I’m just gonna say it here and now; this, right here, is home to the best breakfast Amsterdam has to offer. The clue is in the name.

Enjoy food inspired by American, British, and Mexican breakfasts. You can easily come here for light fare like croissants, yogurt bowls, or their yummy pumpkin soup.

Have eggs any way you like – fried eggs, scrambled, poached – you name it. Try the banana French toast, chicken waffles, or a vegan breakfast burger. When I’m really hungry, I opt for one of the “City Breakfast” options, ranging from the New York breakfast, which includes buttermilk pancakes, to the Mexico City breakfast, which includes huevos rancheros.

I love coming here with friends since the menu is extensive and delicious, and the service is primo. I know you’ll love The Breakfast Club too.

12. Dignita

Address: Koninginneweg 218h, 1075 EL Amsterdam, Netherlands and Nieuwe Herengracht 18a, 1018 DP Amsterdam, Netherlands and Spaarndammerstraat 55, 1013 TA Amsterdam, Netherlands

Dignita has three brunch places around the city to feast on poached eggs, falafel sandwiches, and a healthy stack of pancakes, all washed down with fresh juice and strong coffee. Sometimes I just come to this eatery for the amazing coffee, since it’s just as good as the food.

If you also want healthy drinks, there’s kombucha on the menu that I often buy. After all, a healthy gut means more brunch.

The ambiance and service are top-notch, and the brunch spot is good for a solo meal or small group outing. Take advantage of the large portions and share plates with your group. The brunch place is popular, but they have an online booking option for customer convenience. If you’re nearby in Vondelpark, take the time to book a table while enjoying nature.

Between the mango puree pancakes and the shakshuka egg dish, sometimes it’s hard to know what to order. Not only does my food there always taste good, but the presentation is also well thought out too.

13. Yoghurt Barn

Address: Bellamyplein 51 – unit 1, 1053 AT, Amsterdam, Netherlands

It’s been great to see how the Yoghurt Barn has made the transition from dairy to plant-based as they said they would. The Yoghurt Barn is great for your light vegan breakfast desires. They have a wide range of options, including vegan yogurt bowls, acai bowls, wraps, salads, and avocado toast.

The atmosphere is really pleasant with chill music playing throughout the day. The staff is friendly and helpful too. I highly recommend trying their signature Acai bowl with granola and fresh fruit.

If you are looking for something different, try the banana and cacao smoothie bowl. I love that they make all of their own sauces, instead of using store-bought ones. No matter what you choose, it’s sure to be delicious.

14. Gartine

Address: Taksteeg 7, 1012 PB Amsterdam, Netherlands

Have you ever had high tea? If not, Gartine is the perfect place to do so.

You can come here with a group of up to twenty-four people. This oasis in the city center serves breakfast, lunch, and high tea with food sourced from its own garden.

In addition to the standard fare like pancakes and eggs benedict, other homemade options include toasted raisin bread, sourdough toast with old Beemster cheese, a French breakfast, etc.

One of my favorite items is banana chocolate bread. I always enjoy their organic eggs with fresh herbs from the garden. Consider this place for a date spot – I did so a few times.

15. Miss G’s Brunch Boat

Address: Departs from9VFM+VX Amsterdam, Netherlands, Amsterdam

The only thing better than an all-day breakfast is a bottomless brunch – and the only thing better than a bottomless brunch is one where you get to cruise around Amsterdam. Miss G’s Brunch Boat is your destination if you are looking for a unique experience.

Miss G’s main cafe is De Pjip (pictured above) is a great spot to grab a meal when you don’t have time to cruise the canals, but if you’ve got some time and want to experience a breakfast cruise, make your reservations for their sailing experience!

This boat meanders lazily around the canals of the city, taking you to the most scenic parts of Amsterdam. This is one of my all-time favorite things to do in the city, as you enjoy a delicious brunch while you take in the sights and sounds of Amsterdam.

There are all sorts of breakfast items to tuck into, from poached eggs to pancakes and sublime sweet treats. For an extra fee, you can also get access to the open bar for unlimited beer, wine, and cocktails.

It’s the perfect way to enjoy a lazy Sunday morning in Amsterdam. When the weather’s nice, what better way to have brunch? If you are looking for another spot for a romantic brunch date, Miss G’s Brunch boat should be at the top of the list.

If you are looking for something a bit simple and gluten-free, then Cotton Cake is the place to go. It’s a cute shop set in a beautiful old building, with lots of natural light pouring in. Even on gloomy days, it just feels happy.

You can enjoy some classic breakfast items like omelets and sandwiches as well as pastries and smoothies, all while listening to some relaxing music.

I love their gluten-free baked goods, which include GF-free banana bread. When you’re done eating, you can do some shopping right there since the cafe is actually inside a cute concept store.

17. The Lobby at Hotel V

Address: Fizeaustraat 2, 1097 SC Amsterdam, Netherlands

If you’re in the Amsterdam East area, one of the area’s brunch spots is The Lobby Fizeaustraat to sample international and Dutch food specialties. Come here for an a la carte breakfast or weekend brunch.

One of my favorite options is the vegan yogurt bowl. However, when I want something more filling, their French toast is my top choice. You can see the food being prepared in the open kitchen.

I really love the cozy and decadent atmosphere, which makes a lazy brunch here as lazy as possible. The wood panels and fireplaces make me feel at home. Have a comfortable brunch in soft chairs at your table or lounge with a drink on large leather couches.

As a wine connoisseur, I love to come here for a boozy brunch, since the wine list features top selections from the best wine regions in France. The cocktails are noteworthy and the great coffee can easily pick you up when you need it.

18. The Avocado Show

Address: Keizersgracht 449, 1017 DK Amsterdam, Netherlands

If you are an avocado lover looking for the best cafes in Amsterdam for breakfast, check out The Avocado Show. Here you can enjoy a sensational brunch with a generous portion of avocado halves served with most dishes.

Do you want to combine some healthy elements with the pleasure of pancakes during your Amsterdam breakfast? Well, the Avocado Show has two options, such as the Sweet Stack and Sinner Stack that feature spirulina pancakes with sliced avocado and other toppings.

My personal favorite is the Truffle Treasure, a yummy and simple concoction of avocado toast topped with Cajun chicken! If none of these options interest you, try various poached egg dishes like the French Florentine or one of the scrambled egg sandwiches.
