Subaru drops last Wilderness teaser earlier than reveal

Subaru has dropped another teaser photo of its next Wilderness model ahead of an official reveal at the 2023 New York Auto Show, just hours away.

The latest teaser shows the left headlight and a section of its front bumper.

We can see the chunky black bumper and hexagonal LED fog light design seen on the existing Forester Wilderness and Outback Wilderness, though the grille has a unique angled detail.

The cabin has yet to be revealed, but we expect to see seats finished in a water-resistant material, as well as unique stitching and graphics as on other Wilderness models.

If the existing Outback and Forester Wilderness models are any indication, there won’t be any extra power under the bonnet though there may be tweaks like increased ground clearance and a retuned CVT.

A previous teaser showed the new car’s chunky black rear bumper with colourful copper inserts, as well as a stamped Subaru wordmark.

Subaru has yet to confirm which of its models is getting the Wilderness treatment, but based on the latest teaser it’s likely to be the new Crosstrek.

The Crosstrek arrives here this month as a replacement for the XV, which was known as the Crosstrek in the US market.

There, it was the brand’s best seller in 2022.

In the US market, the new Crosstrek offers a choice of 2.0-litre or 2.5-litre four-cylinder Boxer engines. The larger of the two pumps out 136kW of power and 241Nm of torque, but isn’t available here.

The Outback Wilderness was revealed back in April 2021, and the Forester Wilderness in September 2021. Subaru said at the time it was “watching” the vehicles, but didn’t comment on any plans to bring them Down Under.

It confirmed to CarExpert earlier this year that the models were looking more likely for an Australian launch.

“No secrets, we are in discussions with the factory on it. And those are fairly advanced. And we look forward to be able to sharing more one when everything’s confirmed, but it’s definitely in progress,” said Subaru Australia managing director Blair Read.
