Through June 7, 2023, eligible cardmembers of select American Express cards can earn bonus rewards at U.S. supermarkets if a friend applies, is approved and gets a new card through your personalized referral link.

In certain cases (like the American Express® Gold Card), this can boost your earning rate to as high as 9 points per dollar spent on these purchases — and the applicant may also be eligible for a special offer.

Eligible cardmembers of select American Express cards can earn +5 rewards per dollar spent at U.S. supermarkets for three months on up to $25,000 in purchases if a friend applies for a new card through their link, is approved and gets the card. The existing cardmember will receive the bonus as 5 additional Membership Rewards points, 5% additional cash back or 5 additional miles for every dollar spent on eligible purchases, depending on the type of rewards they earn on the applicable card.

Note that these additional rewards are on top of whatever you’re already earning on supermarket purchases with your card. You’ll still earn the standard referral bonus if your friend or family member is approved and gets the card. However, this offer is only available for a limited time, so your referral must use your link to apply and submit an application by June 7, 2023.

Here’s how this would work for one card in particular.

The Amex Gold Card already offers 4 points per dollar spent at U.S. supermarkets (on up to $25,000 in purchases each calendar year, then 1 point per dollar). If you successfully refer a friend or family member to the card by June 7, 2023, you’d earn 5 additional points per dollar spent on those purchases for three months on up to $25,000.

This translates to a potential total of 9 points — 4 points, plus the additional 5 — per dollar spent on these purchases for the next three months if a friend applies and is approved through your referral link (and ultimately gets the card).

There are three ways to refer a friend to apply for an eligible American Express card:

• Through SMS text messaging (mobile app only).

Alternatively, log into your American Express account, then locate the “Useful Links” section on the right-hand side. If you click on the “Refer Friends. Earn Rewards” link, it’ll take you to the referral landing page.

If you’d prefer to use the American Express smartphone app, simply log in and select the card you want to refer. Then, tap “Membership” at the bottom to see the “Refer a Friend” option.

Once you’ve reached the refer-a-friend page, you’ll see the terms for your referral offer on each one of your eligible American Express cards. This will also display your friend’s welcome offer (though both of these may vary by cardmember). You’ll then see the applicable options to start the referral process.

Again, this limited-time offer to earn additional rewards at U.S. supermarkets is in addition to the standard referral bonus you’d receive. In the above Amex Gold scenario, you could earn 5 additional Membership Rewards points at U.S. supermarkets along with a bonus (up to the cap of 100,000 points per calendar year) for your referral if your friend is ultimately approved and gets the card.

Additionally, keep in mind that the +5 rewards can only be earned once per card, even if you refer multiple individuals to apply.
