RAM is bringing its first electric pickup to the New York auto show. The 2025 RAM 1500 Rev isn’t the hyper-futuristic model that the company originally showed off, but it still has plenty to offer — like a maximum targeted range of 500 miles on the bigger of two battery packs and towing that will put it head and shoulders above the half-ton electric pickup pack.

After teasing us with some incredibly futuristic concepts and drawings, RAM showed the exterior of the truck back in February.

The production truck RAM revealed was almost a letdown at first glance. Instead of a cab that cut into the bed and what looked like a unibody, the truck’s bodywork is clearly that of a standard RAM 1500 with some mild cosmetic changes. Now RAM is giving a look at the inside plus some range figures and capability numbers that suddenly make it much more impressive.

New Electric Platform

The frame underneath is not the same as the gas RAM 1500. The company calls it STLA Large and says that it is an EV-centric platform. Though it will share some similarities with the gas truck, it is wider and made to be stronger yet lighter.

Between the frame rails will be a pair of 250kW electric drive units. The drive units combine a motor, gearbox, and inverter. The one up front has an automatic hub disconnect to help save electrons when the extra power and traction aren’t needed. The drive unit in the back will offer an electronic locking limited-slip differential for traction when off-roading.

RAM 1500 Rev’s standard battery packs 168kWh. That’s significantly more than Ford offers in the Lightning, which has 98kWh and 131kWh packs.

With the standard pack, RAM is shooting for 350 miles of electric range. That’s 30 miles more than Ford’s big pack can do and 120 miles more than Ford’s small pack.

If that range isn’t enough, RAM plans a 229kWh large battery pack. The pack would be the biggest on the market, and RAM expects to be able to get 500 miles of electric range from it.

Come charge time, both should be able to add 110 miles in around 10 minutes. Level 3 DC fast charging at 800 volts helps make that possible.

Job & Campsite Power

Like the Lightning, RAM will have two-way power. You’ll be able to supply up to 7.2 kW to home and workplace electronics from a panel in the bed and 3.6 kW from one in the frunk. Again like the Lightning, you’ll be able to power another EV from the RAM Rev.

RAM is no stranger to aggressive design, and the RAM 1500 REV stays true to form. The flattened nose with large RAM badge lighting will be hard to miss. The same goes for the “tuning fork” LED front lights.

Big Frunk, Locking Bed Storage

There’s a new hood, as well. It opens up along with the nose to give you access to the front trunk. With 15 cubic feet of enclosed cargo space, RAM says it’s the largest in the segment.

For even more cargo space, RAM Rev will have RamBox locking storage to use the empty space in the bedsides. The box will have a 115-volt electrical plug to help keep your devices charged. It also has interior lights and drain plugs.

Cabin Adds More, Larger Screens

The cabin is a near match for the gas RAM truck, but there are some significant upgrades. The center screen, for example, is a new larger 14.5-inch unit. RAM will also offer a passenger-side screen so that your co-pilot can handle navigation and track-choosing duties. The passenger screen can also be used to show the exterior camera views when you need a bit of help maneuvering.

RAM says it has stepped up luxury over the standard gas RAM. That includes new materials, textures, and colors. It also includes options like dual wireless phone chargers. And the 24-way power-adjustable seats on the new top-spec Tungsten trim. A 23-speaker Klipsch audio system is also new and includes a 12-inch subwoofer and speakers in the front seatbacks.

For buyers not ready for the super-swank Tungsten trim, RAM will sell Tradesman, Big Horn/Lone Star, Laramie, and Limited grades of the electric pickup.

RAM EV Truck Offers Gas-Level Towing

Performance numbers are just a target for now, but RAM is shooting for the moon. The company is targeting 4.4 seconds to 60 miles per hour, for a start, thanks to an expected 654 horsepower and 620 pound-feet of torque.

RAM is going for 14,000 pounds of towing capacity, as much as any half-ton gas truck. Max payload is targeted to be 2,700 pounds, another figure at the top of the pack.

On Sale Late Next Year

The RAM 1500 Rev is still targeting model year 2025, and the company has said we should expect it on sale in Q4 of 2024. Pricing and more complete specs will come closer to the truck hitting dealers.

RAM also said a RAM 1500 Rev XR with “class-shattering” range will follow. That one will likely have a gas engine that can charge the battery on the move.
