“Harriet Tubman: The Journey to Freedom” Statue Begins Residency at Button Farm Residing Historical past Heart

The Journey To Freedom Statue at Button Farm Living History Center

Button Farm Living History Center and Heritage Montgomery are proud to host Harriet Tubman: The Journey to Freedom from April 1 to May 30, 2023 in Germantown, Maryland. This moving tribute has traveled to major cities across the nation and depicts Tubman as a formidable force on the perilous Underground Railroad.

The statue, created by sculptor Wesley Wofford, is a dramatic 9-foot tall, 13-foot long depiction of the legendary self-liberator as she guides a child to freedom on the perilous Underground Railroad. This residency will mark the first visit of the statue to Montgomery County, Maryland and the Washington, DC metro area since it was launched on a nationwide tour in 2020.

During its residency, Harriet Tubman: The Journey to Freedom will be viewable to school groups and educators, and to the general public on weekends. Special themed weekends will include Earth Day featuring “Nature’s Role” in Tubman’s journeys; a Mother’s Day tribute to inspirational women, and a Memorial Day weekend celebration honoring Tubman’s service as a Civil War spy and scout among other events. Guided and self-guided tours will be offered along with educational presentations and exhibits. Performances, music, food, and fun will round out an array of family-friendly activities.

Additional information about the residency, planned events, and admission tickets are available on the Button Farm Living History Center website.
