The BMW X1 ranks #2 in Switzerland in March.
The Swiss new car market is up 15.9% year-on-year to 25,184 units in March, which means Q1 2023 sales gain 8.5% to 58,819. 4×4 sales are up 19.5% for the month to 12,608 and 50.1% share vs. 48.6% over the same month last year, and up 10.7% year-to-date to 29,386 and a round 50% share vs. 48.9% in 2022. Petrol sales gain 12.5% to 8,955 and 35.6% share vs. 36.7% in March 2022 and edge up 4.3% YTD to 21,502 and 36.6% share vs. 38% last year. Diesel is up for once at +4.7% to 2,343 and 9.3% share vs. 10.3% last year but drops -12.7% YTD to 5,581 and 9.5% share vs. 11.8%. HEV+MHEV soar 30.7% to 6,920 and 27.5% share vs. 24.4% in March 2022, and are up 21.6% YTD to 16,243 and 27.6% share vs. 24.6% over the same period a year ago. PHEV are up 8.9% to 2,131 for the month, a 8.5% share vs. 9% last year, and up 4.1% YTD to 5,205 and 8.8% share vs. 9.2% last year. Finally BEV can’t march the market growth at +13.1% to 4,812 and 19.1% share vs. 19.6% in March 2022 and but beat the market YTD at +16.2% to 10,250 and 17.4% share vs. 16.3%.
Volkswagen (+14%) remains the best-selling brand in the country with a round 10% share. It distances Mercedes (+33.6%) and BMW (+4.3%), with the two premium brands also climbing to #2 and #3 year-to-date respectively. Audi (+19.8%) and Skoda (+35.7%) round out the Top 5 in solid manner. Ford (+47.8%) and Toyota (+18.9%) also beat the market in the remainder of the Top 10 whereas Tesla (-20.2%) plunges but gains 18 spots on February to #7. Nissan (+272.8%), Jeep (+63.3%), Cupra (+60.7%), Mini (+42%), Citroen (+40%), Seat (+36.9%) and Mazda (+35.5%) highlight the rest of the charts.
Model-wise, the Tesla Model Y (+41.5%) returns to the top spot both for the month and year-to-date, it already finished 2022 in the lead. Note that at 3.7% share, the Model Y is the only model above 1.8% share and therefore sells more than double any other nameplate. Poor sales of the Model 3 (-72.2%) justify the Tesla brand being in negative this month. The BMW X1 (+65.1%) is up 14 spots on February to land at #2, ahead of the Dacia Duster (+45.6%) up seven ranks to #4. The Audi Q3 (+17.9%) makes it for SUVs in the Top 4, with the Skoda Octavia (+85.8%), VW Polo (+68.8%), Volvo XC40 (+59.2%) and Mercedes GLC (+38.6%) also very dynamic below.
