Volvo has debuted its flagship EX90 Excellence at this week’s Shanghai motor show, which ditches the third row of seating in favour of plusher second-row appointments.
The flagship model is targeted at the Chinese market where high-end, chauffeur-driven cars are in high demand.
Volvo Car Australia hasn’t confirmed whether it’s coming here, though an Excellence version of the outgoing XC90 was offered here from 2017 to 2020.
“As with all of our model introductions we will consider and evaluate as to how it fits in to the local market,” said a company spokesperson.
Volvo has made most of its adjustments inside, with only minor exterior changes which include two-tone paint options and 22-inch forged wheels.
Second-row occupants get more stretch-out space thanks to the removal of the third row, and sit in a pair of captain’s chairs with three-stage heating and five levels of massaging.
Sustainable wool or Nordico upholstery is available, with the latter created from recycled materials as well as bio-attributed materials from forests in Sweden and Finland.
The second row comes equipped with a centre console that features a fridge big enough to store a large water bottle, as well as cupholders, natural wood accents and touch controls for seat-heating and massage functions.
There is now the option to customise a sensory experience, with three fragrances available from a dispenser as well as mood lighting options. This is controlled via a Orrefors crystal control on the second-row centre console.
A NVIDIA DRIVE in-car computing platform powers functions like the infotainment, with Snapdragon Cockpit Platforms from Qualcomm and software developed in-house by Volvo. Like the standard EX90, there’s a 14.5-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen for the infotainment.
A new Bowers and Wilkins High Fidelity sound system with Dolby Atmos provides 3D surround sound throughout the vehicle.
The EX90 Excellence will feature Volvo’s extensive safety suite available on the regular EX90 which includes LiDAR as standard.
In November last year, Volvo announced the EX90 as the all-electric successor to the XC90, featuring a dual-motor all-wheel drive powertrain with a 111kWh battery pack.
Total system outputs are 380kW of power and 910Nm of torque, with a claimed 590km of range under the stricter WLTP cycle.
