Unveiling the secrets and techniques of a Ferrari F50: How difficult is it to restore a clutch?

Ferrari has always been synonymous with high-performance sports cars, and the F50 is no exception.

This supercar was produced from 1995 to 1997 in a production run of just 349 units. It was designed to commemorate the brand’s 50th anniversary and was the successor to the iconic F40.

The F50’s incredible engine and stunning design made it a classic, albeit one that took time to emerge from its successor’s shadow.

However, owning a Ferrari F50 is not without its challenges. Mid-engine Ferraris from the ’80s and ’90s are notorious for being difficult to service, and the F50 might just be the most complex of them all. A clutch job on an F50 is particularly challenging, and requires significant expertise and effort to complete.

The clutch replacement process involves removing the entire rear section of the car, including the bumper, wheels, suspension, exhaust, and all.

The transaxle, which is located behind the engine, is accessed through the rear of the car. This means that everything in the way must be taken out first.

Joe Macari Servicing, an official Ferrari shop located in London, posted a time-lapse video and a handful of pictures of an F50 clutch service job.

The video showcases the impressive skills of two technicians who are seen meticulously detaching everything to get access to the transaxle. The rear section of the car remains stationary, while the rest of the car is lifted up and away. Once the car is separated, everything is easy to access, allowing the technicians to replace the clutch.

The F50 is a complex machine, and it’s no surprise that it requires significant work to keep it in top condition. In addition to the clutch replacement process, the F50 also has a unique engine setup that requires regular attention.

The F50 features a naturally-aspirated 4.7-litre V12 engine producing 520 horsepower, and can reach a top speed of 325km/h. This engine is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100km/h in just 3.8 seconds. Keeping the engine running smoothly requires specialised knowledge and expertise only experienced mechanics possess.

The F50 is an incredible work of engineering, and its stunning design and incredible performance make it a true collector’s item.

If you’re considering buying an F50, be prepared for the challenges that come with owning such a complex machine.
