The legendary Nurburgring has increase the minimum speed requirements for drivers taking on the Tourist Drive on the Nordschleife or Grand Prix circuit.
According to Road and Track, the track will now require drivers have a vehicle capable of a reaching a minimum speed of 80mph (130km/h).
Anyone with a driver’s licence can register for a hot lap at the famous Nurburgring circuit under its Tourist Drive event for €30-35 (AU$49-57).
Alongside the new minimum speed requirement participants are not permitted to drift, stop along the track, and must adhere to a vehicle noise restriction of less than 130dB.
The new restrictions may exclude some classic cars from the track. Prior to the new rule, vehicles had a minimum 30mph (48km/h) speed requirement.
Some tourists will be able to rest easier knowing they won’t be closing in fast on some of the less powerful vehicles that struggle to climb the hill between between Bergwerk and Klosertal.
It’s worth noting that the Autobahn in Germany has a recommended speed limit of 80mph (130km/h).
The increase in safety requirements come after a fatal crash in 2021, which also resulted in the 21.8km-long circuit adding warning lights throughout the track similar to in high-level motorsport.
Nikola Koprivica, 34, was killed when his Mazda MX-5 hit a truck attending to a disabled vehicle that had spilt fluid on the track near the Bergwerk corner. Seven people were taken to hospital and Koprivica died on the scene.
