Whipped (Dalgona) Espresso – A Stunning Mess

Whipped coffee is exactly what it sounds like: coffee made from just three ingredients and whipped into a frothy, almost whipped cream texture. You can then add whipped coffee to hot or cold milk or a milk alternative for a caffeinated treat.

I’ve also seen whipped coffee called other names like: Dalgona coffee, Frappe coffee, Beaten coffee, and also TikTok coffee. Lol.

Whipped coffee is made from instant coffee granules, sugar, and hot water. It’s naturally vegan/dairy-free and you can use almost any kind of granulated (non-liquid) sugar or sweetener to make it.

Ingredients

  • Instant Coffee – I like Nescafe which is widely available. But other instant coffee brands will work as well.
  • Sugar – I almost always use granulated white sugar, but brown sugar or coconut sugar would work too.
  • Hot water – almost boiling

You can add a few other ingredients to alter the flavor if you like—things like a little bit of cinnamon or a small splash of vanilla extract.

How to Make Whipped Coffee

Add all three ingredients to a large mixing bowl or a large jar. Use a hand mixer, immersion blender with whisk, or milk frothing wand to whip the coffee into soft peaks. This will take around 3-5 minutes.

You can whip coffee by hand with a whisk. This will take a lot more effort, but can be done. It will likely take more like 5-8 minutes to get the creamy, frothy texture you want.

Once your coffee is whipped, you can add it to a glass of cold milk or a mug of hot milk. Any milk you prefer works great: dairy milk, oat milk, soy milk, almond milk, etc.

Tips for Success

  • If you use a milk frothing wand, I like to whip the ingredients in a large jar, as it keeps any spray from the frothing contained.
  • Immersion blenders with a whisk attachment work the very best for single serving amounts IMO.
  • Electric hand mixers or even a stand mixer (like a Kitchen Aid) can work too!

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is whipped coffee?

Coffee made from blending together instant coffee, sugar, and hot water (in equal parts) creates whipped, frothy coffee that resembles whipped cream.

Whipped coffee was made popular on TikTok, but it’s been around and made by many cultures (including South Korea where it’s called Dalgona coffee) for years.

Can I make whipped coffee without sugar?

Yes, you can make whipped coffee with only instant coffee and hot water. However, the whipped structure will not hold its shape long, as it’s the sugar that helps it keep its shape.

So, whipped coffee made without sugar will quickly deflate and dissolve into whatever liquid you serve it with, like milk.

Can I use hot or cold milk with whipped coffee?

Yes. You can serve whipped coffee over any hot or cold liquid you prefer. But it is most commonly served over cold milk with ice.
