Ford Ranger scores eighth straight win, Tesla Mannequin Y wins one month – Greatest Promoting Automobiles Weblog

New Zealand new vehicle sales edge down -0.3% year-on-year in 2022 to 164,813 units. This is still an outstanding result given the 2021 volume was an all-time record. We are therefore looking at the 2nd highest annual tally in New Zealand history. SUVs climb 5.5% to 87,669 sales and 53.2% share vs. 50.3% a year ago, light commercials drop a harsh -11.8% to 40,948 and 24.8% share vs. 28.2% in 2021 and passenger cars edge down -0.8% to 28,316 and 17.2% share vs. 17.3% last year. Sales to rental companies soar 56.9% year-on-year to 16,627 units.

In the brands ranking, Toyota (-1.8%) trails the market slightly to 17.5% share vs. 17.7% and once again Mitsubishi (+18.5%) delivers an outstanding performance and improves its share from 12.2% to 14.5%. Ford (-18.6%) is in a really tough spot at #3 and reduces its share by two percentage points to 8.5%. Kia (+9.8%) and Suzuki (+8.1%) score solid gains to round out the Top 5 with Hyundai (+2.2%) in tow. Tesla (+113.5%) leaps up 6 ranks to land at a formidable 7th place and ranked #2 in December. MG (+39.3%) is the other great performer in the Top 10, up 3 spots to #9. Notice also BYD landing directly at #19 and ranking #9 in November and December.

Model-wise, the Ford Ranger (-8%) signs an 8th consecutive annual win at 7%, way above its archenemy the Toyota Hilux (+16.1%) catching up at 5.9% share. The Mitsubishi Outlander (+39.9%) surges up to remain the best-selling SUV in the country but stays 3rd at 5.5% share. 22% of its volume are to rental companies where it ranks #1 vs. 13% last year. The Mitsubishi Triton (+23.6%) is up two spots on 2021 to make it 3 pickups in the Top 4. The Toyota RAV4 (-5.6%) drops one rank to #5. Spectacular result for the Tesla Model Y landing directly at #6 with 2.6% share but ranking #1 in September and #2 in November and December. The Suzuki Swift (+38.8%), Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross (+84.4%) and MG ZS (+30.4%) all post fantastic results in the remainder of the Top 10.

We now have a Top 15 models to rental companies, dominated by the Mitsubishi Outlander (+139.9%), Toyota Corolla, Toyota RAV4 and Kia Stonic.
