78,841 new cars hit Slovak roads in 2022, a 4.2% year-on-year increase. Brand leader Skoda (-9.8%) goes against the market with a hefty loss and sees its share fall from 20.3% in 2021 to 17.6% now. On the other hand the next 3 best-selling brands outrace the market. Hyundai (+13.6%) sees its share climb from 10.8% to 11.7%, Kia (+15.7%) goes from 10.2% to 11.3% and Toyota (+36.8%) surges from 8% to 10.5%. Volkswagen (-2.3%) underperforms at #5 while Dacia (+36%) is up two spots on last year to #6. Peugeot (-15.1%), Opel (-6.1%), BMW (-3.6%) and Mercedes (+1.3%) all trail the market in the remainder of the Top 10. Notice also DS (+179.5%), Cupra (+115.1%), Lexus (+64.3%), Ssangyong (+57.9%), Seat (+38.8%), Ford (+32.6%), Fiat (+17.9%) and Audi (+16.9%) all in great shape.
We have a historical moment in the models ranking: for the first time since the birth of Slovakia in 1993, it is not a Skoda on top. The Hyundai i30 (+8.5%) takes a convincing lead with 4.8% share, toppling the Skoda Fabia (-21.7%) in complete freefall from 5.5% share a year ago to 4.1% now. The i30 topped the charts five times this year. In third place and #1 in November, thanks to the new generation the Kia Sportage (+78.5%) surges ahead and gains six spots on 2021 to round out the podium. The Kia Ceed (+9.7%) stays at #4 with the Skoda Octavia (-20.1%) closing the Top 5 in paltry fashion. The Dacia Duster (+48.7%), Toyota RAV4 (+44.4%) and Hyundai Tucson (+11%) all beat the market in the remainder of the Top 10.
