Genesis GV90: Electrical BMW X7 rival due in 2025 – report

Genesis’ growing SUV family is set to get another member: the flagship GV90.

A table published by Autospy, ostensibly containing information gathered from parts suppliers, details the launch timing of various Genesis SUV models.

An updated GV80 is reportedly set to enter production in October 2023, followed by the significantly lower volume (5000 units vs 65,000 units) GV80 Coupe in January 2024. The latter was revealed this year in concept form.

Updates for the GV70 and Electrified GV70 are due in May 2024 and August 2024, respectively, with a GV60 update reportedly due in February 2025.

The GV90 will follow all of these, with the table listing a production start date of November 2025.

Genesis has previously confirmed all new vehicle launches from 2025 onwards will be electric vehicles ahead of the brand’s switch to an EV-only line-up from 2030, so the GV90 is almost certain to be electric.

An earlier report out of Korea suggested the GV90 would use the E-GMP architecture underpinning most new Hyundai, Kia and Genesis electric vehicles, including the Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 7.

It could serve as an electric rival to the likes of the BMW X7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS.

Genesis may already have given us a look at the GV90.

It released a teaser image in 2021 depicting scale models on a shelf, one of which was clearly the GV80 Coupe that hadn’t even been revealed in concept form yet.

Looking at the bottom of the shelf unit, there’s a shadowy SUV which is still quite rakish but with a more conventional SUV silhouette than the GV80 Coupe.

Genesis’ current flagship SUV, the BMW X5-rivalling GV80, is 4945mm long, 1975mm wide, 1715mm tall and rides a 2955mm wheelbase, so there’s room above it for something larger considering the BMW and Benz are both around 5.1-5.2m long.

For context, the Kia EV9 measures 5010mm long, 1980mm wide and 1755mm-1780mm tall on a 3100mm wheelbase.

The EV9 offers a choice of 76.1kWh and 99.8kWh batteries, with range of 541km on the rear-wheel drive Long Range model with 19-inch wheels.

It offers 800V ultra-fast charging capability like other vehicles on the E-GMP platform, and Kia says 239km of range can be added in 15 minutes.

Kia’s flagship electric SUV will also offer three different powertrains: 150kW/350Nm and 160kW/350Nm single-motor rear-wheel drive configurations, plus a 283kW/600Nm dual-motor all-wheel drive set-up.

A hotter GT version has also been promised, as has Level 3 autonomous driving technology.
