Wildlife feeding banned in Toronto

The City of Toronto has amended Chapter 349 of its Animal Bylaw to ban the feeding of wildlife.

As of April 1, it became illegal to feed wildlife or leave food out to attract animals on public and private property. The feeding of songbirds is still permitted, provided the feeder is kept in a sanitary condition and does not act as an attractant to other wildlife.

Toronto Deputy Mayor Jennifer McKelvie tweeted, “They’re not pets. Don’t feed them. Feeding wildlife conditions animals to expect food from people, putting both animals and the community at risk. Let’s respect their natural habitat and enable them to thrive independently.”

The fine for violating the bylaw is reportedly $365.
