Galea wins awards for OOD


Ontario OUT of DOORS Assistant Editor Steve Galea was honoured again by the Outdoors Writers of Canada (OWC) as winners of the organization’s 2023 annual awards were announced on Sunday, June 25.

He took second and third place, respectively, in the Hunting Feature category, for “The gathering” from the August 2022 issue and “Silent alarms, the non-vocal whitetail language from the 2023-2023 Hunting Annual.

Galea, who has penned the award-winning My Outdoors column since 1996, won two OWC awards in 2022 and 2021 and three in 2020.

Other work honoured

OOD contributors also won for work for other publications.

Jeff Helsdon won first place in the Ducks Unlimited Canada Award in Conservation for “Canada’s forgotten conservationist” in Canada’s History. He also won third place in the Other Feature category for “Ruffed times for ruffed grouse” in Farmer’s Almanac and second place for The Future of Hunting in Canada Award for “On the wild side” in Turkey Country.

James Smedley also won third place in the Photography – Fish, Wildlife, and Wild Spaces category for “Ice cave icicles” in Northern Ontario Travel.

More than 100 entries assessed

Judges evaluated 110 submissions in 10 categories, OWC Awards Chair Adam Patterson stated.

“Thank you to all of the judges who volunteered so many hours to evaluate the submissions, and a very special thank you to our sponsors, Tourism Saskatchewan, Shimano, Outdoor Group Media, Ducks Unlimited Canada, Benelli, and Delta Waterfowl,” he wrote. “Support from our sponsors and the dedication of our judges continues to raise the bar for Outdoor Communications in Canada.”
