The original outpost of this venerated brand, the St. Regis New York opened its doors to guests on the corner of Fifth Avenue and East 55th Street way back in 1904 and has been setting the bar for luxury ever since thanks to its regally appointed rooms and now-famous butler service, which founder John Jacob Astor IV considered essential to creating “the finest hotel in the world,” as he styled it.

The St. Regis Bora Bora Resort offers guests the opportunity to snorkel the surrounding reefs, fish for their dinner on all-day boating excursions, and enjoy plenty of other activities both on land and in the water.

Even the most ardent Marriott Bonvoy loyalists might not have had the chance to check out the St. Regis Hong Kong yet due to the fact that it opened in 2019, not long before the pandemic. But if you haven’t gotten there yet, what are you waiting for?

In Hong Kong’s central Wan Chai district near the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, this hotel is perfectly located for both business and leisure travelers with eye-catching interior decor by designer André Fu (whose other notable projects include the Waldorf Astoria Bangkok and Singapore’s Fullerton Bay Hotel) meant to evoke a “curated mansion.” That look includes ceiling-high contemporary Asian screens, marble floors polished to a gleam and murals and other accent art evocative of a classical Chinese garden in full bloom.

In a metropolis where space is at a premium, guest rooms start at a massive 538 square feet and have cozy sitting areas framed by panoramic windows and beds with the brand’s signature pillowtop mattresses dressed in white linens with colorful throws, as well as geometrically patterned carpets and dramatic lantern-inspired hanging light fixtures. The bathrooms are clad in deep-veined marble with dual vanities, enclosed water closets, walk-in showers and separate tubs.

The hotel has a relatively large fitness center with Technogym cardio and weight equipment and — a rarity for Hong Kong — an outdoor lap pool with loungers. After years of anticipation, St. Regis Cairo opened in July 2020, becoming Egypt’s first outpost of the celebrated brand. One of the label’s larger incarnations, the hotel’s 233 rooms, 50 suites and 79 residences occupy a gleaming 36-story tower in the tony Nile Corniche district.

With nods to the riverine surrounds, rooms have decorative paneling painted with papyrus motifs, geometrically patterned carpets and lamps reminiscent of the tiling of nearby mosques and large windows for views of Old Cairo and the waters of the Nile. They start at a spacious 495 square feet, some of which real estate is taken up by palatial bathrooms with marble and travertine tiling, souk-style sconce lamps, walk-in showers and separate tubs with mosaic backsplashes.

Your butler or the hotel concierges can arrange for any number of outings in and around the ancient city, but if you want to stay in-house, you can take advantage of both indoor and outdoor pools, including a kids pool, the large Technogym-equipped fitness center, or by booking a salubrious spa day and enjoying one of the signature pharaonic rituals like the soothing “Hatchepsut Flower Bath” followed by a beautifying body scrub.

Why stay here: Beautifully renovated, this historic hotel is just off one of Rome’s most grand piazzas.

You might book the St. Regis Rome because of its central location smack dab between the Roma Termini train station and the Villa Borghese. However, once you walk through its imposing doors (it began life back in 1894 as hotel impresario Cesar Ritz’s Grand Hotel), you might not even be tempted to get out and explore the Eternal City.

It was recently renovated by hotel designer du jour Pierre-Yves Rochon, with an eye toward upping the luxury but in a tasteful manner that highlights the edifice’s gilded past. The light-filled lobby is dominated by a massive Murano glass chandelier, which gently casts its glow on intricate mosaic floors, hand-painted murals, delicate wall and crown molding and various seating vignettes for the hotel’s main restaurant Lumen, Cocktails & Cuisine.
