Scotiabank Platinum American Specific Card: All-Time-Excessive Provide of 70,000 Factors (Ending Quickly!)

In the latter part of 2022, Scotiabank released some spectacular welcome bonuses on their trio of American Express travel credit cards.

The all-time-high offer of up to 70,000 Scene+ points on the Scotiabank Platinum American Express Card is set to expire on January 31, 2023. If you want to take advantage of this deal, be sure to apply before then to score the record welcome bonus.

The offers for the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card and the Scotiabank American Express Card don’t expire until April 30, 2023, so you still have plenty of time to consider them.

Scotiabank Platinum American Express Card: Up to 70,000 Scene+ Points

The Scotiabank Platinum American Express Card is offering an all-time-high welcome bonus of up to 70,000 Scene+ points for new applicants, divided as follows:

  • Earn 50,000 Scene+ points upon spending $3,000 in the first three months
  • Earn an additional 20,000 Scene+ points upon spending $10,000 in the first 14 months

The card has an annual fee of $399 for the primary cardholder.

The Scotiabank Platinum Amex traditionally hasn’t been very interesting, especially compared to American Express’s very own premium travel credit cards.

However, a welcome bonus of up to 70,000 Scene+ points makes it worthwhile to apply for in spite of the $399 upfront annual fee, as you’ll be unlocking $200+ in value in the first year.

There’s also a Priority Pass membership with 10 lounge visits thrown in, and the Scotiabank Platinum Amex also gives you access to Plaza Premium lounges too.

As part of recent changes to the Scotiabank Amex cards, the Scotiabank Platinum Amex will also no longer levy foreign transaction fees, making it superior to Amex’s very own Platinum cards in that sense.

Meanwhile, the earning rates on this card are more simplified than the Gold version. Previously offering a 4–1 split for different merchant categories, the Scotiabank Platinum Amex earns a flat 2 Scene+ points per dollar spent on all purchases.

Unlike the Scotia Gold Amex, this offer has a shorter eligibility period and is available until January 31, 2023, so you’ll have until then to pick up this card for $200+ in value and another slot for your Amex Offers.

Scotiabank Gold American Express Card: 45,000 Scene+ Points + First Year Free

The Scotiabank Gold American Express Card is offering up to 45,000 points for new applicants, broken down as follows:

  • Earn 25,000 Scene+ points upon spending $1,000 in the first three months
  • Earn an additional 20,000 Scene+ points upon spending $7,500 in the first year
  • Get a first year annual fee waiver (normally $120)

Scotiabank typically has very achievable spending requirements, and this offer is no exception: only $1,000 for the bulk of the bonus.

And if you spend a lot on the card’s bonus categories, I’d say it’s well worth going for the second spend threshold. The Scotia Gold Amex earns 5 points per dollar spent on groceries, with a boost to 6 points per dollar spent at Empire grocery stores.

For $7,500 spent at the proper merchants, you’d earn up to 45,000 points on everyday spending, in addition to the full 45,000 points with the signup offer!

That would bring your grand total to 90,000 Scene+ points, or a value of $900. That’s incredible for a card that doesn’t offer outsized redemptions, only fixed-value points.

In case you spend in other categories, you might earn a bit less, but the rewards can still be quite plentiful. The full earning rates are as follows:

  • 6 Scene+ points per dollar spent at Empire grocery stores, which includes popular brands like Sobeys and Safeway
  • 5 Scene+ points per dollar spent on other groceries, dining (including restaurants, bars, cafes, and food delivery), and entertainment tickets
  • 3 Scene+ points per dollar spent on gas, transit, and streaming services
  • 1 Scene+ point per dollar spent on everything else

As before, the card has no foreign transaction fees – always a nice touch on a lifestyle card marketed to travellers.

And although the card isn’t issued by American Express (instead it runs on the Amex payment network), it’s still eligible for Amex Offers for cardholders, so you can take advantage of deals as they become available.

This offer is available until April 30, 2023, so you have lots of time to decide if you’re interested, or where this card will fit into your big-picture strategy.

Scotiabank American Express Card: Up to 12,000 Scene+ Points

The Scotiabank American Express Card is offering an all-time-high welcome bonus of up to 12,000 Scene+ points for new applicants, distributed as follows:

  • Earn 7,000 Scene+ points upon spending $750 in the first three months
  • Earn an additional 5,000 Scene+ points upon spending $5,000 in the first year

This is Scotiabank’s no-fee Amex product, so its lower welcome bonuses are also commensurate with the ongoing annual fee of $0.

The second chunk of 5,000 Scene+ points for spending $5,000 is arguably a rather poor value proposition, amounting to only a further 1% in return on spend.

However, there’s still a very compelling reason to get this card: easy access to Amex Offers via no-fee primary and supplementary cards.

While Amex-issued Amex cards can’t be manually registered for Amex Offers beyond the cards that are targeted, Scotiabank-issued Amex cards can be.

Therefore, the Scotia Amex Card can essentially be used as a “farm” for registering for things like up to 10% off Oxford Properties gift cards, 20% off Canadian Shangri-La hotels, etc.

On the earning side, the Scotiabank American Express Card offers the following earning rates:

  • 2 Scene+ points per dollar spent on groceries, dining, entertainment, gas, transit, and select streaming services
  • 1 Scene+ point per dollar spent on all other purchases

Thus, using this card for your daily spend would only be recommended for individuals who are building newer credit files or sticking to a tight budget in terms of annual fees.

If you don’t currently have this card and want to get it, be sure to apply before April 30, 2023 to capture the elevated welcome bonus while you do so.

Conclusion

Scotiabank has further upped the ante on their American Express products, restoring a very competitive welcome offer on the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card, while raising the Scotiabank Platinum American Express Card and Scotiabank American Express Card to all-time-high levels.

The welcome offers on the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card and the Scotiabank American Express Card expire on April 30, 2023, while the welcome offer on the Scotiabank Platinum American Express expires earlier on January 31, 2023.

Now is a great time to get started with Scotiabank if you haven’t already, whether it’s for the flexibility of Scene+ points, the strong grocery earning rates on the Scotia Gold Amex, or the scalability of additional Amex Offers by registering manually.
