Renault Clio now #1 YTD, Tesla and MG impress – Finest Promoting Automobiles Weblog

The Renault Clio is the best-selling model in June and now also YTD.

Although French new car sales gain 11.5% year-on-year in June to 190,848 registrations, we are still lower than the 199,509 of June 2021, 233,820 of June 2020 and 230,965 of June 2019. The year-to-date tally halfway through the year is now up 15.3% or 118,000 units to 889,777. Petrol sales gain 8.3% for the month to 68,272 units and 35.8% share vs. 36.8% a year ago, year-to-date, pertrol is up 16.7% to 337,8986 and 38% share vs. 37.5% over H1 2022. Diesel sinks -41.8% to 17,673 and 9.3% share vs. 17.8% in June 2022 and is down -27.8% over H1 to 93,899 and 10.6% share vs. 16.8% las year. HEVs are up 27.9% for the month to 46,103 and 24.2% share vs. 21.1% last year and up 25% YTD to 205,104 and 23% share vs. 21.3% a year ago. PHEVs soar 50.2% to 17,969 and 9.4% share vs. 7% in 2022 and are up 24.2% YTD to 77,991 and 8.8% share vs. 8.1% last year. BEVs surge 52.3% to a record 33,343 units and 17.5% share vs. 12.8% a year ago and are up 47.9% over H1 to 138,077 and 15.5% share vs. 12.1% over H1 2022.

In the brands ranking, the entire Top 4 goes against the market with year-on-year drops. Renault (-8.5%) confirms it is back at the helm of its home market with a very dominant 17.5% share whereas Peugeot (-10.5%) continues to underperform at 13.3% share vs. 15% over H1. Dacia (-10.5%) cements its third place with Citroen (-4.4%) back to the 4th position it holds year-to-date. Volkswagen (+30.6%) and Toyota (+32.4%) surge below but not as much as Tesla (+182.8%) up to #7, however below its March 2023 score. Hyundai (+28.5%), Kia (+34.7%) and Opel (+14.5%) all beat the market to close out the Top 10, as do Ford (+53%), BMW (+28.3%) and Audi (+18.7%). Below, MG is estimated to climb 278.9% year-on-year to hit #17 with record volume and share. Volvo (+101%) and Suzuki (+49.2%) also impress.

Model-wise, the Renault Clio (+19.1%) holds a fantastic 6.5% share vs. just 4.4% for its archenemy the Peugeot 208 (-27.4%) in great difficulty. As a result the Clio snaps the YTD top spot, dislodging the 208 which was #1 over the Full Year 2022. The Dacia Sandero (-27%) and Renault Captur (-22.5%) follow but are very weak unlike the Citroen C3 (+23.2%) rounding out the Top 5. The Peugeot 2008 (-1.7%) recedes two spots on May to #6, distancing he Peugeot 308 (-17.8%) already in trouble. Tesla places the Model Y (+120.8%) at #8 and the Model 3 (+278.8%) at #9, making them the two best-selling foreign nameplates in the country. The Fiat 500 (+13.3%) repeats inside the Top 10 at #10 while the Renault Austral is down two ranks on last month to #12. The Toyota Yaris (+13%) and Yaris Cross (+59.5%) follow just as the Renault Arkana (-20.5%) falls 9 spots to #15. The MG4 breaks into the Top 20 for the first time at #20 and is the best-selling recent launch in France (<12 months).

Previous month: France May 2023: Renault Clio in charge again, Arkana up to record #6

One year ago: France June 2022: Dacia repeats at #3, crosses 10% share milestone for the first time, Jogger up to #12
