No one really loves Porsche’s turbo flat-fours, which is why Stuttgart—without admitting it ever screwed up the 718 Cayman and Boxster—answered customer complaints with a 4.0-liter flat-six option later in the lifecycle. It’s unrelated to the 4.0-liter six in the RS models and in the 911 GT3 models, but for brevity, know that both of these engines are motorsport—the lifeblood of the entire Porsche brand—in the very best way. High-revving and raspy, full of character, and never out of breath, these engines are phenomenal and are the reason Porsche’s GT cars command so much money and stubbornly refused to depreciate (the GT4 and Spyder are sold out and were the last manuals available with the uprated engines).
