The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is getting an update, though you’ll have to peer really closely to see just what’s changed.
This camouflaged G-Class was spied by CarExpert’s Derek Fung among a convoy of disguised Mercedes-Benz models in Arizona.
The iconic G-Wagen is perhaps best known for how little it has changed stylistically, even as it finally entered its second generation in 2018 after almost 40 years.
On this prototype, we can see an additional slat for the grille and tweaks to the front bumper, but no changes to the lighting front and rear.
The changes inside could be more significant, judging by the greater use of camouflage there, though we can still see the silhouette of the same prominent array housing the digital instrument cluster and touchscreen infotainment system.
It seems likely the G-Class will move from Mercedes-Benz’s old COMAND infotainment system to the newer MBUX, given COMAND has essentially been phased out.
The spied prototype is a Mercedes-Benz and not Mercedes-AMG G-Class, something that’s no longer available in Australia following the axing of the G400d in 2022.
The Mercedes-AMG G63, the only variant offered in Australia, may see similar tweaks, but continue to offer its own AMG-specific styling details.
It packs a twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre petrol V8 with 430kW of power and 850Nm of torque.
It’s unclear whether there will be any updates to the engine line-up, though we do know of one new powertrain that’s coming soon.
The EQG will be the first electric G-Class, and is expected to be revealed in 2024. A prototype was spied testing earlier this year.
First previewed with the 2021 Concept EQG, it’s set to use a quad-motor all-wheel drive system.
