United Cuts Newark Schedule for The rest of Summer time

As anticipated after its second-quarter earnings call last week, United Airlines has temporarily cut its schedule at Newark Liberty International Airport, the carrier announced Wednesday. Daily flights have been trimmed to about 395 from 410.

The cuts come after several days of disruptions in late June due to weather as well as what it called a shortage of air traffic controllers in the New York City region.

“We’re doing our part to improve the experience of every customer who flies through EWR and create a little extra operational breathing room for every airline that operates there,” United said in a statement. “We trimmed about 15 flights from our daily schedule in August and early September and will continue to fly larger planes that give customers more seat options to get to their destinations. Newark remains an important part of our United Next growth strategy, and these moves set us up well for the future.”

No international flights have been affected by the cuts, but the carrier will temporarily end service between Newark and Honolulu through Sept. 4, with customers being routed to Hawaii through one of United’s other hubs, according to the carrier.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration in April granted airlines the flexibility to reduce their schedules in the New York region by up to 10 percent without losing slots. That waiver currently ends Sept. 15.
