2023 BMW 4 Collection, M4 getting up to date infotainment

BMW’s rollout of its new-generation infotainment operating system and curved dash continues with the 4 Series and M4.

All coupe, convertible and Gran Coupe models are getting BMW Operating System 8 (aka iDrive 8), as well as what the brand calls its BMW Curved Display.

As previously seen in models like the related electric i4, this comprises a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system in one slightly curved assembly.

We’ve contacted BMW Australia to confirm when the interior updates will arrive in Australia.

The company says the updates will go into production in the northern spring, or March-May 2023.

The new-generation operating system sees the 4 Series and M4 lose some physical controls in favour of greater voice capabilities.

Other updates specified in the global press release include a new gear shifter, available Aluminium Rhombicle interior trim and high-gloss Shadowline window surrounds for the 4 Series, and a Sensatec-wrapped instrument panel for the M4.

The M4 coupe will also gain the option of an M design graphic for the bonnet and boot lid, available in both high-gloss black and red.

Both BMW iDrive 8 and the BMW Curved Display have already appeared in the related 3 Series and M3, as well as the aforementioned i4.

BMW is already looking ahead to the introduction of iDrive 8.5 and iDrive 9, announced at this year’s CES.

The X1 is set to be the first to get iDrive 9, while iDrive 8.5 will appear imminently on the just-released 7 Series and upcoming 2024 5 Series and i5.

iDrive 9 will be rolled out to the X2 and future Mini models, with iDrive 8.5 adopted by the likes of the i4, iX, XM, X7, 2 Series coupe and 3 Series.

Sound confusing? BMW Blog explains the systems will be identical in their user interfaces, but iDrive 8.5 will be Linux-based and iDrive 9 will be Android-based. Vehicles with iDrive 9, therefore, will have access to an app store.
