Alfa Romeo’s unique V6 supercar to revive basic title – report


Alfa Romeo is set to reveal its upcoming supercar on August 30 and will reportedly dust off an iconic nameplate.

Autocar reports the Italian carmaker will name this upcoming supercar the 33 like the iconic 33 Stradale mid-engined sports car produced between 1967 and 1969; Alfa Romeo also used the 33 nameplate on a considerably less exciting replacement for the Alfasud in the 1980s.

It was previously speculated the new supercar could be called the 6C, aligning it with the now discontinued four-cylinder 4C and V8-powered 8C Competizione.

Only 33 examples of the new Alfa Romeo 33 will reportedly be built, with each priced at more than €1 million (~A$1.7 million).

The supercar’s projected top speed is also reportedly 333km/h.

It’s expected the so-called Alfa Romeo 33 will be powered by either a version of the Giulia Quadrifoglio‘s 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine, which will likely be boosted to produce more than 375kW, or a version of the mid-engined Maserati MC20‘s Nettuno twin-turbo V6 engine.

Italian publication Quattroroute recently reported the 33 would use the latter, augmented with at least one electric motor for a total power output of 596kW – up from 470kW in the MC20.

According to Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato, the new supercar won’t follow the original 33 Stradale’s design slavishly. Instead it’s expected to feature various cues from the iconic sports car.

One such cue could be doors that also form a portion of the roof, improving access to the cabin.

The company has released a single teaser image ahead of the unveiling at Alfa Romeo’s museum in Arese, Italy.

The teaser doesn’t give much away, only showing sporty-looking vents and a classic Alfa red exterior finish.

The tagline reads ‘Il corragio di sognare’, translating to ‘dare to dream’ or ‘the courage of dreaming’.

To be revealed ahead of the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, the Milan-based brand may draw parallels between the sports car and its performance engineering developments fostered in the Alfa Romeo Stake Formula 1 team.

Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato made the announcement while revealing the facelifted Giulia and Stelvio models in China, telling attendees: “This project is a dream come true, inspired by a daring team that wanted to achieve something unique.”

Making the announcement in China was “not a coincidence”, indicating Alfa Romeo’s intentions to allocate effort and resources to tap into the Chinese market with a target of 40 per cent of sales outside of Europe.

According to Autocar, Mr Imparato confirmed orders for the unnamed supercar began in February.

“It will be sold out before I unveil the car”, he said.

Mr Imparato said the model will “contribute to the DNA” of the brand and sit “beside the 8C in the museum of Arese”.

Alfa Romeo’s current lineup consists of the mid-sized Giulia sedan and Stelvio SUV, along with the smaller Tonale SUV.

A smaller SUV to sit below Tonale is also expected to join the Alfa Romeo lineup in 2024, with its first standalone electric model due in 2025.

Alfa Romeo has also confirmed the reborn GTV coupe could become a reality in 2026.
