A One-Day Itinerary to Copy

Imagine waking up to the warm sun streaming through your window, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and delicious Italian pastries luring you out of your cozy bed. You open your balcony door to the remarkable sight of Sorrento’s sparkling blue sea, the sound of waves crashing against the stunning coastline filling your ears.

A relaxing day at the beach may be tempting, but the allure of the jewel of the Amalfi Coast, Capri, is simply irresistible.

Now, picture yourself boarding a private boat or a convenient ferry, leaving the mainland behind as you embark on a journey to Capri. History, nature, local food, and luxury unite this dreamy destination.

A day trip to Capri from Sorrento is the perfect fusion of adventure and relaxation — an experience you’ll remember for the rest of your life.

In this day trip to Capri itinerary, I’ll show you how to discover the hidden treasures of Capri, from the legendary Blue Grotto to the breathtaking Gardens of Augustus, and where to find the perfect limoncello-infused gelato along the way.

Pack your passion for exploration and a sense of wanderlust, and prepare to be captivated by the idyllic island of Capri.

What to Pack for a Capri Day Trip

When I took a day trip from Sorrento to Capri, I knew packing efficiently was crucial. So, let me share with you the essentials that made my journey comfortable and enjoyable.

Besides loads of camera equipment, my bag was set up to be as light as possible, knowing I would be hiking, walking, taking a bus, and more. If you want to conquer any day trip efficiently, always pack with versatility.

First thing first, let’s talk about luggage. Particularly on a Capri day trip, you don’t want to be weighed down by a huge bag. A small, lightweight backpack or messenger bag is your best bet.

This way, you can easily carry it with you as you explore the island and have your hands free for snapping photos, enjoying limoncello, or even catching the scent of freshly grilled seafood wafting through the air. Now, let’s dive into the contents of your bag.

The sun can be intense in Capri, so don’t forget to pack a wide-brimmed hat to shield your face from those rays. Besides keeping you cooler, it’ll give you that effortlessly chic vibe Capri is known for. Next up: attire. Focus on breathable and comfortable clothing since you’ll be out and about all day. Trust me.

You’ll thank yourself as you maneuver Capri town’s charming yet sometimes steep streets. Opt for light, airy fabrics and pack an extra layer like a light scarf, shawl, or shemagh for when the coastal breeze picks up in the evening, depending on when you visit Capri. I never forget to pack these travel essentials:

  • Sunscreen: Protect your skin from the fierce Mediterranean sun.
  • Sunglasses: See the azure blue seas with ease and style.
  • Comfortable shoes: You’ll be doing a lot of walking, so choose wisely.
  • Water bottle: Stay hydrated as you explore the island.
  • Camera or smartphone: Capture the dazzling beauty of Capri.

Planning Your Day Trip to Capri

Remember that Capri is a legend, a jewel in Europe’s Mediterranean crown! With a well-planned itinerary, your day trip to Capri will be a captivating experience.

How Much Does a Day Trip to Capri Cost?

Cost is always a significant factor when planning a trip. Let me break down the expenses for you. First and foremost, you’ll need to get to Capri from Sorrento.

The most affordable and convenient option is to take a ferry, which costs between €14.70 and €18.30 for a one-way trip. I recommend booking a round-trip ticket in advance to avoid long lines, especially during peak summer months like August. Remember that high-speed ferries are more expensive but can save you time.

Once on the island, you might consider visiting attractions like the Blue Grotto, Mount Solaro, or Villa San Michele. The entry fee for the Blue Grotto is €14 and is not included in boat tours or transfers. You can grab a quick sandwich or refreshing gelato for a few euros or a more substantial meal at a restaurant for lunch.

Considering transportation costs, attraction fees, and meals, I’d estimate a day trip to Capri from Sorrento would cost between €50 and €80 per person. Remember, prices may vary based on your preferences and activities, but this should give you a general idea of what to expect.

Organizing Your Capri Itinerary

Capri has many attractions, and with a little planning, you can easily cover the highlights in one day. Here’s my suggested itinerary:

  1. Boat tour and Blue Grotto: Begin your day with a boat tour to see the island’s magnificent coastline. The best part? Witnessing the enchanting Blue Grotto.
  2. Monte Solaro: Take a chairlift up to Monte Solaro for panoramic Mediterranean and Amalfi Coast views.
  3. Garden of Augustus: Stroll through the peaceful Garden of Augustus, where you can admire lush flora and breathtaking scenery.
  4. Piazzetta: End your day by exploring Capri’s main square, Piazzetta, where you’ll find inviting cafes and elegant boutiques.

Best Time to Visit Capri

Capri is a very popular day trip destination for tourists staying in the region. The ideal time to visit is during the shoulder season, typically April, May, and June, before the sweltering heat and summer tourist crowds arrive.

I made my way to Capri from Sorrento in May 2023, which was perfect. The Mediterranean Sea had already started to warm up, and the island was alive with dynamic colors.

You should also consider visiting Capri in autumn or winter if you’re an adventure-seeker who doesn’t mind cooler temperatures. Just remember that certain attractions might not be accessible in winter.

How to Get to Capri from Sorrento

Ferry at Marina Grande, Capri

Getting to Capri is pretty straightforward. You can take the ferry, a hydrofoil, or private boat from Naples or from Sorrento.

I opted for the comfortable ferry from Sorrento. This scenic adventure was something I had been looking forward to throughout my entire tour of the Amalfi Coast.

I used Ferry Hopper to book my ferry tickets in advance for about 20 euros each way. It’s essential to note that the mobile reservation needs to be exchanged for a physical ticket at the ticket office.

Here is a table of the different transportation options:

Departure Point Mode of Transport/strong> Approximate Duration/strong>
Naples (Beverello) Ferry/Hydrofoil 45 min – 1 hour (Direct, no detours)
Sorrento Ferry/Hydrofoil 20 – 50 min (Direct, no detours)
Salerno Ferry 1.5 hours

Remember that tour and ferry schedules might vary depending on the season and weather. Naples, Salerno, and Sorrento are well-connected to other European cities, so planning an itinerary with a Capri day trip should be seamless.

As it was the off-peak season, Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast were relatively quiet, making it an ideal time to explore the area without being caught in the bustling tourist traffic.

My primary focus during my free time on this trip was the scenery rather than shopping or visiting all the famous restaurants and Capri’s popular attractions, which invariably come with long wait times.

Arriving at Capri

The ferry ride was smooth, and I reached Capri town without issues. After a short trip, I decided to explore the stunning island leisurely without following a strict itinerary, enjoying the serene atmosphere and breathtaking views.

Best Things to Do on a Capri Day Trip

To make the most of your trip, I highly recommend researching the top places to visit on a day tour of Capri Island. Having had the opportunity to explore Capri myself, I’d like to share some of my insider suggestions for your visit.

First and foremost, the famous Blue Grotto should be on your list. To avoid long queues, visit the Blue Grotto immediately after getting off the ferry at Marina Grande port by taking a Capri boat tour.

You can book a boat tour from the port or one in advance, which I recommend for staying on schedule for your one-day Capri itinerary. This private boat tour will take you to the Blue Grotto and allow you to experience its enchanting beauty.

Next, hop on a bus to Anacapri, where you’ll find the chairlift to Mount Solaro, the highest point of Capri. The top panoramic views are breathtaking and not to be missed. While in Anacapri, also take the time to visit Villa San Michele, a magnificent villa surrounded by lush gardens.

First Stop: Boat Tours to the Blue Grotto

One of the highlights of my visit to Capri was the boat tour to the enchanting Blue Grotto. I had heard so much about this magical place and was excited to experience it firsthand!

Upon arrival at the Marina Grande port in Capri, I noticed a few boat tour companies offering trips to the Blue Grotto. I chose one with good reviews, and I’m glad I did! The journey to the grotto was a scenic and relaxing boat ride along the stunning Capri coastline.

As I approached the entrance of the Blue Grotto, it became apparent just how unique this place is. The cave’s entrance was quite small and narrow, and our boat captain expertly guided us.

Once inside, the cave opened into an otherworldly space filled with the most incredible blue glow. The sunlight filtering through the water created a mesmerizing and unforgettable effect. It doesn’t look real, or at least it glows so brightly you’d think it was man-made – but it’s all-natural.

Second Stop: Mount Solaro and Villa San Michele

During my day trip to Capri from Sorrento, one of the highlights was visiting Mount Solaro and Villa San Michele. To reach this vantage point, I took a bus from the Marina Grande port to Anacapri, and from there, I hopped on a thrilling chairlift.

The ride up to the top was an experience, offering breathtaking views of the island and the sparkling sea surrounding it. At the summit, I was treated to gorgeous views and an unrivaled panoramic view of Capri. Being on top of the world was truly magical, and the photo ops weren’t too shabby either!

After soaking in the beauty, you should head down the chairlift to visit the enchanting Villa San Michele. This impressive villa, nestled on the cliffs of Anacapri, was once home to the Swedish physician and author Axel Munthe.

The villa now serves as a museum, showcasing a stunning collection of art and artifacts. The beautifully maintained gardens surrounding the villa were a delight to walk through, offering magnificent vistas of the Mediterranean Sea.

If you plan a trip to Capri, I highly recommend including both spots in your itinerary. The combination of stunning views, intriguing past, and gorgeous gardens make it a memorable experience that shouldn’t be missed.

Third Stop: Ride the Funicular to Capri Town’s Famed Piazzetta

One of the best ways to enjoy a day trip to Capri from Sorrento is by taking the funicular up to the town’s famed Piazzetta. Trust me, this 4-minute ride is an experience you don’t want to miss when visiting the island. Try to arrive early in the morning to avoid the long queues, especially during the high season.

If your first stop is the Blue Grotto, you’ll likely arrive just in time for some crowds. To save some time, I highly recommend purchasing the funicular ticket from the tobacco shop at the port of Sorrento before boarding the ferry to Capri.

Once you disembark the boat in Capri, head straight to the funicular through the tunnel right before the arrival pier – you can’t miss it. As the funicular swiftly climbs up the cliffside, you’ll be treated to amazing panoramas of the Marina Grande and the turquoise waters below.

Upon arriving at the Piazzetta, you’ll find yourself centrally located in Capri town, surrounded by lively cafes, luxury boutiques, and charming winding streets. From here, you can start exploring the island’s many attractions.

Take a relaxed walk to the Gardens of Augustus or venture along Via Camerelle to Punta Tragara, known for its remarkable views of the famous Faraglioni rock formations. Don’t forget to treat yourself to a refreshing gelato or a cappuccino at one of the charming local cafes in the Piazzetta!

Fourth Stop: Soak in Jaw-Dropping Views at the Garden of Augustus

During my day trip to Capri, one of the must-see attractions I discovered was the Garden of Augustus. I had heard so much about the stunning beauty of this place, and when I got there, the amazing views took my breath away.

The Garden of Augustus, also known as Giardini di Augusto in Italian, is a lovely botanical garden perched on a cliff overlooking the deep blue waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

The gardens represent Italian horticulture in full bloom and are adorned with colorful flowers, flowerbeds, rich vegetation, and picturesque paths. As I meandered through the lush gardens, I found several lookout points that provided jaw-dropping panoramic views of the Faraglioni rocks, the iconic Marina Piccola, and Via Krupp winding its way down to the water.

Entrance to the Garden of Augustus is quite affordable, and the experience was well worth the small fee. I spent a good amount of time soaking in the breathtaking views, capturing the beauty of Capri through my camera lens, and simply appreciating the serenity this place had to offer.

Fifth Stop: Hiking to Anacapri

The next stop on my itinerary was Anacapri again. Eager to burn off my lunchtime pizza (I’ll get onto that in a bit), I decided to hike to the village, soaking in the picturesque views as I made my way up. However, for those who are less adventurous or don’t have time to spare, taking a bus to Anacapri (like I did earlier in the day) might prove a more suitable option.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t complete the hike due to a road closure, so I changed my plans and headed back down, opting to explore the seaside road instead. Although it felt like a slight setback, the situation was a blessing in disguise, as I discovered beautiful vistas along my detour.

Fifth Stop (Again): Exploring Capri Town

I then returned to Capri town after my failed hike to Anacapri. It wasn’t too much of a deviation from my original plans. Walking around this charming town, I was further enamored by its stunning architecture, enhancing an already delightful experience.

I also saw the island’s backside, with a castle perched at the top of a mountain in the distance. After a day of exertion, I treated myself to a refreshing emerald spritz – the perfect way to conclude the trip.

Final Stop: Watch the Boats at Marina Grande

With about 45 minutes to spare, I returned to Marina Grande, the port where I had initially arrived. The 13-minute walk to Capri’s town center provided one last opportunity to enjoy the gorgeous landscape. Despite the failed hike to Anacapri taking up valuable time, I saw a lot in the three hours I had on the island for this day trip.

Upon arriving at Marina Grande, I explored the shops and restaurants, providing a pleasant way to pass the time before the ferry back to Sorrento. Finally, I boarded the ferry, waving goodbye to the beautiful island of Capri, taking with me memories of a day well spent.

Upon arrival at the port of Marina Grande, I was greeted by the Funicular Railway, an efficient and quick way to reach the town of Capri. I hopped on it and marveled at the amazing panoramas it offered as it ascended the hillside. The ride only took about 4 minutes, and the ticket cost was reasonable.

Scooter Rentals

Once in Capri town, I decided to rent a scooter to explore Capri Island freely. The rental process was straightforward, and there were several agencies to choose from.

There’s no topping this approach to feel like a local, cruising along the winding roads and discovering the tucked-away gems of the island than on a scooter. Just be prepared for the narrow streets and tight turns – and wear a helmet!

Hiking Trails

As an avid hiker, I couldn’t resist exploring some of Capri’s trails. I discovered various paths to choose from, catering to different fitness and experience levels.

My favorite was the trek to Monte Solaro, offering panoramic views of the island and the sea beyond. The hike is moderately challenging, and a good pair of shoes is crucial, but the rewards are definitely worth the effort.

Navigating Capri during my day trip from Sorrento proved to be an adventure, with each mode of transport providing its unique perspective. Funicular rides, scooters, and hiking trails contributed to an unforgettable journey on this charming island.

During my Capri day trip, I knew that one of the best ways to truly experience the island’s charm was by stopping for a delicious lunch at one of its many fantastic eateries. After exploring the island’s stunning sights, there’s nothing better than taking a break and savoring the local flavors.

For a truly memorable lunch, I visited the picturesque village of Anacapri. I chose to dine at La Rondinella, a cozy and traditional Italian trattoria nestled in the heart of the village. The restaurant’s terrace offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, making it the perfect spot to unwind amidst the peaceful atmosphere.

The menu at La Rondinella offers a variety of mouthwatering Mediterranean dishes made from fresh, local ingredients. I couldn’t resist trying their homemade pasta, perfectly cooked and accompanied by their signature tomato sauce.

For a unique and authentic taste of Capri, I also sampled their insalata caprese, a deliciously refreshing salad made with tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil. As I enjoyed my meal, I couldn’t help but marvel at the island’s stunning beauty and feel incredibly grateful to have discovered this hidden culinary gem.
